AA has held up new hire classes for the last Sept and both Oct dates. No classes will be held in Dec. The Schoolhouse is backed up. With more Mad Dogs being retired and other upgrades internal to the pilot group, they are swamped.
Both Nov classes (11/7 and 11/28) are scheduled to happen, with 44 scheduled in each. Based on that, there should be 649 hires for all of 2017.
When the big retirement wave hits, in a couple of years, they will need to be ready to hire and train twice as many as this year.

This is what makes it head scratching to me. Delta and United have hired nearly 1000/year for the last couple years (minus United this year for unforeseen 747 retirements and training center consolodation), but AA can't keep up with 500-700 plus a handful of displacements and retirements. The hiring wave has barely hit, yet AA is behind the curve. I hope (I don't assume in this business) that they'll get their ish together by then, otherwise it will be a mess.

Don't discount the impact of the MDs going away. Some are this year and some are next year, but using 15 pilots per plane, that is 855 MD-80 pilots being retrained for other equipment, plus all the 'routine' upgrades. That is a bunch.
AA is going to have to expand the Schoolhouse capacity to handle everything that is starting to hit. Having to cancel 3 classes of new hire pilots they need certainly provided a wake up call for management they must take action. The problem is clear. The impact is clear. The solution is clear.

Yes. APC shows AA mandatory retirement of 409 this year. They are on track to hire 649. Their plan at the beginning of the year was 750.

Having a few dozen pilots waiting for Multi-Engine flights because they have one instructor was ridiculous.

From what I've seen, the hiring slows every Holiday season. December often has no classes, or a very small one. If they're backed up at all, then slowing in November makes sense too.
Relax; if they're hiring, Envoy's flowing.

Long time lurker... failed my MV yesterday for the 145. Anyone know how many extra sims you get and how long it takes to get rescheduled? And do they set you up with a captain next time?
I had my sim partner from NH class all the way til yesterday.
