There's a lot more to see than can be seen in one day, but when I went for a day, this is what I did:

0630ish Breakfast in Port en Bessin, cup of coffee and a croissant watched the fishing boats come with the mornings catch. Walked through the German and American Cemeteries. Had beef Tripe at a small restaurant in a small village for lunch. Visited the Fox Green sector of Omaha Beach, went to a D-Day Museum, then Pointe Du Hoc for the last hour or two and watched sunset. On the way back stopped and saw the Sainte Mere Eglise for a few minutes, but I hear they have a nice museum. Was a LONG but great day. Check out Normandy Tours of the D-Day Landing Sites by D-Day Tours for some other ideas.

Car rentals are inexpensive, a Renault isn't bad for a compact, lot better than any Ford/Chevy I ever rented. The drive is about 3-4 hours each way from Paris, but it's some really gorgeous country side. Take extra batteries and memory card for the camera, I used a second set of both.
