The solution isn’t to get rid of them, or make XJT a less desireable place to call home. It’s to grow so that they are not preventing qualified FOs from getting captain time.

One solution: let qualified FOs upgrade to CA at 1000 hours in company, period. Then let them fly in the left seat as the captain and log PIC time. Older captains can fly in the right seat as a “First Officer”, while still enjoying their 18 year captain pay, scheduling, seniority, vacation time, etc.

Then the airline can advertise quickest upgrade time allowed by law and avoid “getting rid of” the people who like working there.

With the decent contract, great pay for younger FOs, and growth prospects, I bet classes would be overflowing.

Exactly! Couldn’t have said it better.

The pay and work rules can suck. If the upgrades are quick, you will always have a supply in the pipeline. Proven time and time again.

The pay is great, work rules so so, upgrade time 8 years or more. No thanks.

The pay sucks, work rules great, upgrade 8 years or more. Nope, all set.

Pays great, work rules pretty good, upgrade 5 years or less. Well that’s a major or legacy. Go home regional you’re drunk.

Upgrade time with actual PIC time in short order, or belly up. XJT has one option if they want to see the new hires they set out for.

dot dot dot

Why are people banging down the door to get in there?

Because 9E and YX aren't hiring right now. I know that sounds crass, but the OO explosion didn't happen until 9E and YX filled up. OO has the closest pay to those outfits, and they're low risk. SGU bumped pilot pay just in time to catch the post-9E/YX hiring wave. You can fly your butt off there if you want, too.

Most other regionals are one or more of:

- higher risk/higher potential reward (like XJT)
- AA WOs, where poor pay/work rules don't necessarily outweigh flow anymore
- on the way out
- dumpster fires
- lamer than other regionals

Yeah, OO is lame, too, but at least you'd be making decent money while we all laugh at you for doing stupid OO stuff.

Edit: technically, 9E and YX might be hiring, but one wouldn't get a class for a while at this time.
