To each their own and I agree - a ton of us were in that exact dilemma. That said, after a few months of being gone, I don't know many people who have left for a major or legacy and then regret what they left behind at the regional. Yeah you go back to reserve but not for long, you lose some days off but you gain them back soon enough. The big thing I think you'll find is it makes a huge difference working for a carrier that owns the seats and sells the tickets on the planes you're flying around. There's no more whipsaw, wondering what the future holds or if your company will be in business next year, seeing routes and bases disappear month to month, having to wonder about sustainability when resignations outpace new hires by 10:1 some months, worrying about how many lines there will be because yet another United regional is coming into your base, etc.
That and pay - aside from maybe Frontier, there isn't a major out there right now where as a second year FO you won't be making more than every single line captain's base pay at XJT. It's just a huge difference. You tap out at 18 year captain pay at XJT ... year two FO pay is a higher rate at every major/legacy out there. Think about that.
I get the cushy schedule and becoming comfortable with the routine. That was me. And if you have some personal reason to not leave or can't leave for whatever reason, it's respectable. But if you're planning on staying in this industry, I think you'll find most of us former regional guys now at majors will tell you that moving on as soon as you can is the best thing you can do for career progression.

I agree wholeheartedly. He was just asking why we have so many lifers here.

That's going to get OLD in a hurry for the CA's who have 18+ years at ASA and live in & around Atlanta. Can you imagine the fatigue of getting up at 2am to drive up for a 6am show and start a LONG first day or the BS of having to walk to your car after dark at the end of a multi-day trip, having flown 7+ hours on the last day, just to get back in the saddle and drive another 3-4 hours back to the house in Georgia?
Silver lining: sign up for the motel rewards program, I'd bet the motels around TYS are about to get a bunch of new business from these bleary-eyed pilots.
It's a shame ExpressJet wasn't successful chatting with UAL to find a way to build a domicile in ATL. That commute is going to wear those poor old ex-ASA pilots down to the bone. But hey, it's all about the company's ability to make money and never about the QOL for the pilot group. #ThanksALPA

Boo-hoo. People commute and they need to get over it. Some went from driving to work to having drive 1 hour to an airport, take an early AM 3 hour long flight to get in early, then work a long day. And they do it all at the end too.

I'm not sure if this comes as a surprise, but they don't want 18 year lifer CA's here. Closing bases, making QOL terrible, 18 year people back to reserve...that's all part of their strategy to get rid of the old farts and attract new blood.

Now, assuming they want to keep the "luxury" of driving to work, the guy who lives way north in Cartersville is still putting 300 miles RT on his car every time he goes to work. Then, that poor sap living down in ASA-ville, I mean Newnan, will be looking at 500 miles RT on his car, EVERY time he goes to work! LOL!
Of course, they can go try and compete with the DAL and DAL Connection commuters as an OAL jumpseater to/from TYS on what'll probably be an Endeavor CRJ being flown by a captain who was once their 7+ year FO on an ASA jet. (Sprinkle some salt in the wound: That EDV CA is also probably based right there in ATL.)
But you're right. If I was flying through the TYS terminal and I heard some crusty old ex-ASA guy in the starbucks line B!tching about this commute, I'd simply say, "Boo-hoo, get over it. Commuting is part of the job, didn't you know. You made your bed, now lie in it."
