To clarify: either XJT management didn’t see the captain shortage coming or chose to ignore it. Either way, we are short captains right now which is why the ASA transition program is taking priority. Once those are done there will hopefully be enough resources to train new hires as well as conduct CA upgrades for us FOs that would like to.
Ideally we’d have started CA upgrades last fall, in anticipation of all the United hiring that’s happened, but obviously it didn’t. Our company is dealing with a lot of operational stress right now: purchase by United, massive hiring, CA and FO attrition, new 175’s, etc. Any one of these would create waves; all of them at once is painful.

The issue isn’t raw numbers of senior “lifers” but the percentage as a total of the pilot population as the numbers were drawn down by Inc. Places like SkyWest probably have just as many “lifers” if not more, but their pilot population is now about 5,000.
UAL has plenty of -145s they would still like to man. XJT can field them but they needed some good news to “prime” the pump of new hires. Once the ASA pilots are trained I predict:
1. Upgrades, and the times will come down rapidly. If they can increase the number of pilots -145s will be pulled from the desert. More pilots will also decrease the percentage of “lifers”.
2. Steady upgrades. The top of the seniority list will be similar to all the other regionals who are not moving on for one reason or another. But the rest will be captains upgrading their resumes after every trip. Some may go to UAL via the CPP or other legacies as street hires but you will continue to see them leaving for other carriers such as the ULCCs and ACMI.
Standard disclaimers. Results may vary. Objects in the mirror often don’t reflect what’s in front of you.

. Crossing fingers for a return to the Sheraton once all that transition training is out of the way as well
Are there any CBTs or other training material that trainees can review while on that long of a break?

During the interview process we were told the La Quinta would be used for training. I thought ExpressJet was the best when it came to quality hotels. Will this change once I’m on the line or is ExpressJet lowering hotel quality. I hear EV was one of the best for hotels.

When I was hired at Xjet we were with a roommate at the mold infested Holiday Inn during INDOC and systems. On the line the hotels are probably the best of the regionals unless it’s changed since I left.

A lot of people in training right now only a percentage can go the Sheraton. I see the laQuinta as a short term solution for now.
