Having a car in MEM on reserve

So, you may not need to have the car in your state to register it there. YMMV, but worth checking.

Any MD residents with commuter cars in Memphis? I'm a new MD resident and already have my commuter car down in MEM....just wondering how difficult it is to get it registered in MD without it physically being here to pass inspection. -Thanks!

Most states allow a “car is out of state” exemption for the registration. They want your cash. Just don’t get popped in your home state with that car without an inspection or whatever it needs. I kept a crashpad car registered in Texas for 10 years in Memphis and never had a TX state inspection on it.

My airporter never got stolen, hardly ever locked it. Nothing was ever taken out of the bed either (pickup). It once got "moved" without my knowledge or any notification, from one side of the democrat lot to the other. Took some time at 2 am to find the dam thing (FCIF came out a week later). I bought it in MEM from another pilot who thought he wouldn't need it. For $1000. Definitely worth every penny but not a penny more. 20 years later, donated it to a painter who needed a vehicle. Registration was a PITA as I live in a county that requires emissions. And then there were forms that needed verification by law enforcement. But overall, it definitely was used. I thought I would have it for a couple years then get a real vehicle but the dam thing wouldn't die.

I had a car In Memphis for well over 20 years. It is a necessity. When I retired I traded for a sandwich. Two suggestions, it must be reliable and GMan on Democrat needs to be in your contacts.

Unless you’re on reserve for years I fail to see how it’s a “necessity”. In 18 years I’ve had an airport car for about 3 years - and it was more hassle than it was worth. I just rent a car and buy a nice hotel every 9 months. Way cheaper and way more enjoyable than maintaining a crash pad and car beyond reserve status.
