It depends on the guys voice. Some guys I can hear clearly with the headset on others I flip one ear off. Now that I think about it even with the headset off some guys I can hear clearly and others I can't. I hate to interrupt that wonderful approach brief when a guys mumbles as he stares at his iPad, but no headset will help with that guy. I usually keep one ear off when there is a lot of conversation and then put both on when things slow down.

Sorry to revive this old thread. Most people use the company provided headset. I really dont like using them, but without a hot mic in the 757/767 a true ANR is a pain.
I wish we would convert all of them to include a standard hot mic with a switch on the audio panel to shut it off. It would make CRM, and communicating with everyone a whole lot more efficient.
I am searching for info to provide to the company to present this info. Will it help probably not.
As for the aircraft the 757 and 767 at cruise are fine. In the climb they are horrible. We climb the 757 at 315 and descend as high as 325. The wind noise is loud. The 767 is better but being a true freighter from the factory the pack noise is crazy loud. It is a race to get flaps to 5 to get the packs to quiet down. They are so bad many turn off a pack when we taxi in.
Yes the old school guys like the uncovered ear technique. But many are hard of hearing.

Doesn’t seem like a costly mod, but who knows.

Seem some guys on the 76 wrap a rubber band around the lower part of the switch to hold it down into a “hot” position.

Hearing conservation plan. Sit reserve and fly about 2-3 times a month using company provided headsets, at home wear foamies when you mow the grass and Howard Leights (https://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight.../dp/B001T7QJ9O) when you go to the range.

The real conversation is why the company hasn't embraced a fix that most airlines have with a hot mic. We need to rattle the union to get in front of this and for good measure, bring it up personally with lower flight management.

I’m with you. It’s ridiculous that there’s no hot mic option on our airplanes.
