Special Day!

I know many of us remember a unique and special experience that happened during our life, and I wanted to share one of mine...

I know some of you probably have stories that top mine...

...that time you splashed a Mig...
....or got a ride in a P-51....
......caught a fly ball in the stands at the World Series...
.........Hooked up with two playboy bunnies on a Vegas layover...

Well...I had a magic moment too this month....

I got PAID a GPE!...and I didn't even ASK for it! :D

Apparently, GPEs are not mythical beasts. So--there I was...junior in a domicile full of pilots on vacation or sick, with most reserve lines inversed to fill the shortfall...trip trading in VIPS...just trying to squeeze off a couple weeks off dodging "Drop Denied due to Insufficient Reserves" and "Your trip trade with XXX was disapproved...because we don't like him and he didn't get all his LMS done..." etc. messages....when I somehow managed to finally put two trips together and then have the ability to join my family stateside for a couple of weeks. Sunshine! Fresh Air! Open spaces! Clean Water! Then--I saw IT. On my pay summary--there is was--the mythical GPE unicorn! I had heard they were out there--"hidden money"--was the phrase I remember...

Guess what? if you string a couple of optimized trips together that have short, ****ty layovers, VIPS will let you do it. You then can trigger a 3 CH is payment for a 34-in-168 Nonconformance Penalty. Here's the reference: (Section 12.D.10.a.vi.). This section points you to 12.D.2.g., which provides for a trip or series of trips.

Point to this post--outside the (hopefully) funny tone is I got almost 900 bucks for something I didn't even know was in the contract. Would i comb through pairings and try to find a way to select the one that would trigger this next time? Probably not--instead I would pick the trip with the better layovers or deadhead bank. However, in the spirit of passing on info to those who might benefit, you need a good reset every 168 hours. If your trips mash up together and don't have one, you are due the payment. I thought that was worth passing on...

Congrats on scoring the unicorn pay. Glad it is automated now, do you know what extra pay provisions are still manual? extra duty period comes to mind. I wonder how many manual pay provisions I've missed out on. I'm sure I've also won the lotto a few times with lost/unchecked tickets.

GPEs have been automated for at least the last 5 years. Back in 2012, I had my one long reset 53 hour layover turned into two 24s with an added flight. In addition to the extra landing and duty period, I submitted for the GPE. Got a response back that it was unnecessary - once the trip's finished and NLT than the end of the month, it'll show in your pay summary. I responded that was a good thing, because as Albie indicated, it's not a common event.

GPE is the only one I'm certain is automated. Personally, I'd submit a paylog for everything else and assume nothing is going to be automated. I just got turned from an FO into an RFO for two flights. That's 1:30 CH per flight. I misread the CBA and only put in for 1 flight. Caught it 6 months later after a conversation during a flight. Put in for and received confirmation very quickly.

I know the answer, but I'm still gonna say it. WTF is with us having to chase down our pay? ANNNNND...... when we do catch it and submit a paylog, couldn't we at least get a little back up from the payroll folks? They do it every day and I would think they would have the ability to catch the occasional mistake. I know when I put in for stuff I'm not supposed to get, they sure figure that out with no problem.

I find the pay only months handy and simple No need to be concerned about any overage or penalties my 100+ hour IOE trip pays while my 69 hour pay only remains undisturbed.

Ouch. My sincere condolences and respect for your sacrifice. At least you you have the satisfaction of knowing the little "mini-me" new hires you release into the wild are a reflection on you and your extra effort. Between that and total consciousness on your deathbed, I think things are looking up. :D

I have a serious question though. If you're doing a pay only month and you fly a long trip with over 8 hour legs, do you get the BKO between 8-10 hours and block over scheduled added to your pay?

Based on your comment above, you also get nothing for any disruptions?

Are you claiming that if you are awarded a 69 hour pay only line as an LCA, and are then assigned a 100+ hours of student IOE or check rides by the IOE scheduler, you are only paid for 69 hours?

(I'm highly confident it doesn't work that way)

somewhat similar thread. The extra duty periods also appear to be automated now. Just got one paid before we even submitted the paperwork. Nice to see something work like it should.

Ditto......

Duty hour extension to 16.5 hours appeared to be automated as well as of last month.
