New Jumpseat priorities

With the new system. A business traveler can bump a staging crew member, so booking in the business category seems the smart way to commute to MEM. Now does anyone know; if we book the jumpseat into MEM in business or the new level 4 (?) and the flight is delayed or cancelled. Do we still have the same protection as if we booked "staging"? The contract says staging not business. Just wondering if we would still be covered in the "no harm, no foul" rule. Or is the only way we get the "no harm, no foul" trip removal is if we were booked in the staging (7?) category?

BP4:
•Company travel in lieu of company-purchased tickets (or as otherwise authorized)

I don't see how Staging fits in there until the "otherwise authorized" is loosely interpreted. FCIF 17-0279 explains that BP4 can be used "when that jumpseat travel, if it was via a commercial carrier, would be an allowable/reimbursable deviation expense under Section 8.C.3.a.i. and Section 8.C.4. or would be authorized by another section of the collective bargaining agreement (e.g., Section 5.H.2.). For example, jumpseat travel within 3 days of a company-scheduled activity (e.g., trips, r-days, training events, etc.) may be booked in BP4 status." At least it's an FCIF now instead of an e-mail that someone remembers but can't find. :)

If you live in Los Angeles and Book BP7 Staging, and I'm flying a trip with a back-end deadhead from LAX to MEM, I can book BP4 in lieu of that deadhead, as long as it's 3 days beforehand and bump you from your staging jumpseat. How do we feel about that? Previously Business could not bump Staging.

Why would you book Staging (BP7) When you can book BP4? I haven't used staging in years.

I feel confused.
1. I would like clarification on the "no-harm" rules - specifically if booking business status to commute to base somehow relieves us of that commuter protection simply because someone used the word staging in the CBA (back when there was no option to use business status to commute).

2. If we still have that protection via business status, I can't find ANY reason why anyone would ever use staging to get to work. According to the latest guidance, we're authorized business status within 3-days of any activity, so that covers a normal commute. It's higher priority, less chance of being bumped and you can cancel closer to departure time.

3. Finally, I would hope.......I know this is a lot to hope for......
That someone in your LAX-MEM scenario, with a DH ticket no less  and nothing riding on getting to MEM (like making a trip) would NEVER, EVER even think about bumping a commuter (even an offline guy) who is trying to get to work. That's just basic jumpseat 101.

You want some Memphis Bar-B-Q in the middle of your vacation? :)

You're coming to Memphis to participate in Informational Picketing in the middle of days off? ;)

Because you can?

We haven't seen how the new automated system will work yet, but how would we know if or who we were bumping? Even with the current system, if I book Standby and wind up getting Reserved, I don't have any idea what went on behind the scenes to effect that change. I may not know that one of the Reserved was Staging and that the Jumpseat Admin employee sent a "So Sorry" e-mail to a Stager.

How would you know?

1. Prefer St. Louis style

2. I've always booked personal unless it was flight/training related

3. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should

All valid points.
Since I've never bumped someone, I don't know.

Often when I'm standing by for a j/s, I have to make a phone call to j/s admin to get it resolved. I guess I was thinking if the bump process has been used, there would be some kind of feedback to the guy doing the bumping.

Absent that, I guess I would hope, again, that if seats were at a premium and someone booking Biz in lieu of a ticket suddenly found themselves with a seat after being standby, they'd at least look into it.

I agree. I'm afraid if it CAN happen it WILL happen, and, like you, I don't like it.

Need to check the legacy FOM JS priority matrix.

"Business" travel has always had a higher priority than "Staging"
