The answer to the OP is simple... Yes.

Most training letters are going to finish soon. Unless they are only going to be filling vacancies with new hires...a bid has to happen soon.

The Captain Obvious question is the future of the MD-10 fleet. If we actually park hulls and excess off the fleet, the net result will be a movement of bodies from that fleet to the 777, 76, and lesser extent to the A300 and 757.

If we keep the lift, it could be a 200-400 captain bid with a lot of positive movement.

Until the new 767 sims are in place, it is unlikely they could split 75/76 bidpacks, even if they wanted to, so parking a bunch of -10s and guys moving laterally over to the 76 by guys on the property will create a logjam that blocks a lot of "new" captains and FOs from going to the 75/76. (Cue: "Its a mess!" from The Campaign) That would mean a lot of new hires going to the A300 or 777, or a long, slow transition from the -10 with a super long training letter. (Oops--we get to bid for training now!) The result is why FedEx may have a "vision" of how they want to see guys move off the jet, seniority will also be factor and manning may not quite go according to their master plan.

Adding to the fun will be a new 75/76 Training boss and Standards boss.

You can bet nobody will tell us anything--and sometime soon a new bid will be published. That is when we will know... But the thing to watch for is the number of excess slots off the -10/11. That will determine if this is another MOAB type event with some serious advancement or just guys sliding around the system into different seats. There is always a chance a major push of FOs off the -10/11 would ripple into the 777, which has a host of new hires on it now. Some of those pilots enjoying Paris and Hong Kong on layovers may get a little taste of old school 75 hub turns before all the music stops.

And so begins the mental masturbation.

Let it first be said that anyone, self included, who believes they know the future of our fleet, is delusional. Nevertheless, ...

Whatever beancounter predicted the demise of the MD-10 cannot spell reality, much less grasp it. Face it -- there is no direct replacement for it other than the Triple Seven, and we don't have enough of those as it is. If we ever get to the point we don't need the lift the -10 is providing, we have much, much bigger problems.

Speaking of which, when are we going to stop having weekly global IT outages? When I have to wait 90 minutes for a final weight and balance because of a global IT outage, and the secondary system won't work because the primary is down ... I start to worry about the security of my A Plan.

Back in '98 they stopped maintaining the -- THE -- SIM building because it was scheduled for destruction. The roof leaked and ceiling tiles were falling down or missing, and it looked embarrassing. Now they're planning to move an MD-10 sim back over there to make room for the 2 B-767 sims scheduled to be put in the new, new sim building, which is already full. Like I said, anyone who claims to know the future ...

I guess when they were building the new building it was too hard to guess that you might want to build it bigger than current needs. A lot cheaper (in the long run) to do things right the first time.

Boy, how long is the list of bean-counter decisions that fit that description?

Crew rest facility in the MD-11.

RVSM (or, to be more accurate, the decision to NOT equip the fleet for RVSM) for the B-727 (It'll be cheaper to fly low.)

ACARS on the B-757.

MBO (Management By Objective) is a cancer in our company. :(

Captain only bid - we won't see FO vacancy bids.
