Coach upgrades

I prefer to get an exit row seat when I fly coach. It seems the airlines are now charging for this privilege.

Sometimes I have a tight connection due to pairing construction, and I'd like to sit up front and they charge for that as well.

So...

Say my bank is zero. Can I upgrade in steerage and will the company pay for it? Is that in the new contract somewhere that I can find it?

Has anyone done this successfully?

This expense would come out of your bank. If you have no bank(s) it comes out of your paycheck.

Night Flyer, If they schedule tight connections that is their problem not yours. I doubt Jim Bowman runs from one office to another. Call scheduling when you miss your flight and ask them what they are going to do. If enough guys miss flights they will not cut it so close to save a buck.

Spot on. I read NF's post earlier, but didn't have time to respond. Came back to it now, and saw that you hit the nail on the head.

If scheduling has me on a tight connection, crap... give me 26A and I'll work my way up to the exit eventually. I might even have to help a few old ladies get their bags out of the overhead. And... since I was in coach on a 4.5 hour flight, I may have to stop and grab a sandwich for the next leg. Or you can pay $40 to sit closer to the front. The decision is yours.

Another area where we got screwed. Not too many " economy plus" seats available for $40 or less anymore.
