It's also possible to start with a deadhead to any of our typical Asia cities in China, Japan, Taiwan, etc. Some trips come down to the lower 48 (MEM, IND, OAK). From there, they may just go back to ANC or continue to Europe or HNL-Syndey. There are the around the world trips you mentioned. Europe trips typically continue east and end up in Asia with a final leg back to ANC. It's rare that a trip to the lower-48 will remain there with continuing operations in the US. Trips either go right back to ANC (operational or via deadhead) or continue east/west internationally.

I don't disagree with your post. However, I think the ANC domicile days are very limited. The company's push to grab more 777s I believe will kill ANC MD11 domicile pretty soon -- if not LAX or both.

I can see ANC getting a 777 domicile. Too many of our trips go through there now. In fact I'm on a deadhead as I type and there are three 777 bubbas with me doing the same. Anecdotal evidence. But why fly MD11s around the world when the parts just aren't there anymore. It is increasingly becoming very expensive. The USAF has learned this as well with their fleet of KC-10s.

I wasn't really attempting to make a commentary on the longevity of the ANC domicile. The guy asked what the flying was like.

As far as the domiciles in ANC and LAX go, I can't claim any special insight but here are some facts that might make closing them soon very difficult:

1. At last count, we are operating 57 MD-11s. That's a lot of 777s worth of lift and we aren't getting 777s in those kind of numbers yet. The 777 is also not a perfect replacement for the MD in every market (and neither is the 767).
2. An ANC tech stop makes the MD-11 a far more effective freighter getting to/from Asia.
3. ANC is still running -11s back and forth to KIX, ICN, TPE and outbounds to NRT and GUM. These flights are a pretty effective way to get crews into Asia for the shorter intra-Asia flying the MD is still doing on a very regular basis.
4. The LAX domicile allows MD-11 crews to be positioned to/from Asia in one duty period. More than half the FO bidpack and almost that for the Captains involves deadheads that would require adding two days to each trip if MEM based -11 pilots flew them.

None of these factors are insurmountable, but for now, it would appear that a better alternative doesn't really exist, IMO.

My point was to bring up that the MD's international bidpack is shrinking. And it's probably shrinking each month we get a new 777.

Isn't the whole theory behind the RUMINT about ONT that LAX would become a 777 int'l base and the other domestic traffic would leave LAX and move over to Ontario?

Very true but the shrinkage is mainly happening in MEM for now. IMO, I don't see either ANC or LAX on the chopping block any time soon.

On PFC it has been posted that we are receiving 7 B777s in CY19. That’s pretty huge. Expect a large 777 bid soon.

As far as postings go... if you bid for and were awarded something on the last posting, are you eligible to bid for something else on a new posting (let's say 2 mo the from now for all intents and purposes), if you haven't started training for the awarded of the first and original posting?

CBA 24D1,2,3 and 24F.

If you have down bid or lateral bid restrictions or are otherwise restricted (there’s a list of reasons) you can’t bid.

24.D.3 If you have not started training on the previous award and you aren’t restricted from bidding, you can bid and be awarded a superseding award.

If you have started training you must first activate in that position, and serve any time restrictions if they apply, before you go to the superceding position.

I hope this helps. I may be wrong so please check with ALPA.

What do typical lines look like for the MD? Mostly domestic hub turns now or still a fair amount of international flying available?
