You can not pick up trips on R-days. You can try to contingency drop R-days for a specific trip, or drop R-days and hope trips show up that you can pick up, but you get no choice on the trips assigned to you on R-days.

No.. I bid almost exclusively reserve and it has happened to me maybe 3 or 4 times.. And I have come close maybe a dozen times. I remember breaking it twice on R24. They drop you to the bottom of the list when you hit 75%. YMMV

What is the approximate timeline to get off reserve for the various aircraft? I expect quickest for the 757, but what about the widebodies?

It’s dynamic but for right now you may never be forced into a true reserve line for the month... currently the most junior pilots on nearly every fleet are being awarded secondary lines which can be composed of a mix of reserve days or trips (generally undesirable). I’d say if someone wants to truly avoid reserve in all fleets you’re looking to 4-6 months once you’ve finished IOE (probably less for the 757)

There is no real time line at FedEx. It’s not like other airlines. Many of us intentionally bid reserve. Also many senior folks bid it during vacation and holiday months for the footprint. But I would say right now for new hires it’s not taking long. You would have to get a reply from one of them. Sorry can’t help.

My first month of bidding 757, I got a normal line. It has a blend of hotel standby and trips. I could have held bottom of secondary. Depending on when you finish IOE, and how many are in your class, you might avoid reserve all together. But that’s just one guy. Most in my class sat at least a month of A or B reserve.
The 757 will have the quickest seniority progression as this position bid rolls out. About 75% of the 57Fs bid out. In a year, a new hire, post bid, can expect to be roughly 40% in seat.
757 upgrades were as low as 15 months on the last position bid.

When I was on the 757 I had a reserve line for 2-3 months. Luckily, staffing was fine and I dropped everyday of reserve and picked up flying. I don’t think you’d be able to get away with that on the Bus or other airframes.

Thanks for the inputs on the reserve timelines. There are many things to like about FedEx, and one of the big ones is flexibility!
I am living in LAS and plan to stay there until the end of the school year next summer because I have school-aged kids. After that, we might relocate somewhere in the Western US. We are looking at locations near all of the following major airports: SLC, DEN, COS, LAX, SAN (or any So Cal Airport), PHX, and PDX.
What are the major constraints regarding the commute to MEM from these locations?
Separately, has anyone heard about long-term plans for the LAX domicile? If the 767/777 will replace the MD-10/11, any idea whether/when these aircraft might get based in LAX?

Avoid CA for tax reasons.
I have heard DEN is a tough commute, too many commuters, bad airport parking.
COS is similar.
You might also consider Spokane.
TUS seldom has jumpseaters, I don't know about PHX.
Jumpseats to and from SAN are usually full.
