Default Fedex 747?

Looking at flight aware this evening and it looks like there are a number of Fedex flights with the equipment type listed as 747-400(ex. STN-MEM FDX1)? Who is operating these flights? Atlas? Kallita? Why do they have Fedex flight numbers?

Atlas signed an agreement with FedEx to provide five 400s for peak season flying for five years a couple years ago. I think the agreement has three more years to go.

FDX callsigns is odd, though...how does that work with operational control?

Why? They're flying FedEx freight on scheduled FedEx routes.

If I understand the basics of wet leasing correctly, the lessor (FedEx in this case) has operational control.

It's really not that big of a deal. We picked up some flying for Polar Aic Cargo and change our call sign from Connie to Polar for those flights as well.

I've done Atlas flights as QANTAS, Turkish, Cathay, Emirates, Etihad, Quality, Reach and Camber. Probably some others I've forgotten. Reviewing your callsign is a part of the Atlas briefing and you hear pilots checking in stumbling through two or three callsigns. Using the customer's callsign gets you their landing rights and slots. The whole reason Polar is still around. Operational control is a whole lot more than saying we want an airplane to go from ABC to XYZ at 12 o'clock.

Thank goodness for FDX flights and their awesome catering standards. I'm not used to eating that well.

The Corky's is pretty good, even at 0300 for breakfast.

The chocolate cake will either give you a few extra pounds or a sugar rush or a diabetic coma.

I think ANC has the best catering in our system.

If you like the catering, we're hiring...just sayin'.

It's the shrimp cocktail that sets MEM catering apart. And the chocolate cake slice that is a meal in its self.
