Default Foreign Duty Assignments

I was reading the FedEx contract, and it looks like the maximum one can be on a FDA is just under 5 years. Is this the maximum the company can require you be there, or can one volunteer to stay longer if they like it?

You can stay as long as you want in Hong Kong.

You have to leave Germany before your 5 year mark, but my understanding is that you can move back again after a certain amount of time.

You can move back to Germany after being out for a year.

Just a slight semantic correction...

You don't have to leave Germany after 5 years (4 years, 11 months), but you can't be based there. We have pilots who have dual US-EU citizenship, or are married to EU citizens. They don't have to leave Germany, since they have a right to live there through their own or spouses' citizenship rights. They do have to bid out of the base and commute for a year before they can bid back to the EUR FDA. They will also lose the housing allowance, education money, etc. for that year. I know it's a small percentage of people that this may apply to, but there are a few over there that are doing just that.

I "think" I remember that after 5 years FedEx would be required to pay into the German retirement system? So ... you get to move back to the states after 4 years and 11 months.

There is no such restriction on HKG.
