20 yrs ago no one wanted me and now Im getting interviews, times have changed. FedEx & UPS coming up.

Thats the problem, times have changed, I have an established family now with teenage kids. I can put mom back to work however on first year pay its rough. Im hearing first year at UPS and FDX is about 60-70 and me as the sole provider is worrisome.

Is it possible to have a second job while at Fedex? UPS is apparently ok with aviation related non flying jobs such as sim, class instructor as CAE or FSI etc. I don't have a lot of contacts in Memphis.

This may not even be feasible. Im 50 and making close to 2 bills where Im at. It would be rewarding finishing the career with a better company.

You will make 2 bills on 2nd year pay. You will have no time for second job and Mom will appreciate it even more when you don't kill yourself with work. Time for her to go back to work and you both can celebrate in 2 to 3 years!

No extra outside flying for pay allowed at FedEx. Instructing in the Sim would be OK.

If he gets put onto the 757, he won't make close to 2 bills.

That’s not true, you have to work carry over and some extra flying to make 2 bills on year two.

The key to making $200K or more on second year widebody pay is living in base and being able to pick up last minute draft.

Must be dragging along loads and loads of debt.

I get it. I'm in the same boat. Started building a new home based on my current income. But I figure if you have to borrow from retirement for a year, no big deal. It wont get any easier to make the change.

I start next week, Ive sold off about 30k in personal assets. If my kids were 5yrs older it wouldn’t be a possible move. No huge personal debt here. Just typical civilian aviation. Student loans until 38yo, 5 furloughs, decade of industry stagnation, House kids dogs etc etc lol!

If you’re a single income household its going to be rough ride. I think the numbers come out until about age 50. After which, switching gets to be a blurry decision. I sat down with a personal financial advisor for a while. Just for another viewpoint.

I recently came off first year pay. It isn’t easy, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I had originally thought. My cars were paid off and the only debt I had was my mortgage. 3 kids under 13. Single income household. I have a frugal wife that was coupon crazy and every little bit helped. Some folks max out credit cards or take out some home equity to get by. I would say that is a last resort. In short, it’s only a year and I’d guess most everyone can do it. Good luck at the interviews!
