FedEx Bases as New Hire

Just wondering if with FedEx you get to choose your base as a new hire . I know from what I've seen you probably won't get LAX as a new hire but if I were to fly for FedEx I would really be interested in getting the Cologne base(Also what planes will you fly if based in Cologne?). Or do you get assigned one base and be able to change bases later in your career?

My understanding is you cannot be assigned to an overseas base if you don't agree to it.

I believe most new hires currently are being assigned to MEM.

LAX is a senior base, very senior.

CGN takes a few people each bid, as people "time out", i.e. have to go home due to limitations about how long they can stay there.

Bids have always been once or twice a year.

So....

If you get an interview, ask this question.

If you get a call for a class date, let them know you are interested in CGN.

It can't hurt to make your desires know.

CGN is only the 757 at this time.

Some FedEx basics it appears you're not aware of:

Every base OTHER than Memphis is a single aircraft base.
LAX - MD-11
ANC - MD-11
HKG - 767
CGN - 757
IND - 767

Memphis is the only multi-aircraft base and operates everything we fly:
777
MD-11
A300
767
757

Just out of curiosity, what is the maximum time one can be based in CGN? Also, are there any cases where a FedEx pilot had dual US/EU citizenship, and thus not faced any time limitations on being based in CGN?

Dubai (DXB) not a hub or a Domicile.

5 years due to Germany tax laws. Many pilots bid/forced out, but most of them bid back to CGN on the next succeeding System Bid. Several of them just game it and leave their families in Germany during the interim.

Wonder how it would work commuting from another EU country. Been out of the flight deck for about six months now, doing sim stuff, and a former colleague has been telling me I should apply to FedEx. I have dual US/EU citizenship and live in Scandinavia with my wife and kids, who are also EU citizens. Just wonder if it would be workable at all. Of course intra-EU tax treaties as well as the tax issues with Germany and the US might make it a bit too complex. Thanks.

True. But for those outside the company this may be a little misleading regarding HKG. HKG is a 76 base, but we also operate the 75.

If the OP is interested in CGN, let it be known in the interview. It won’t help your chances, but the few spots that are available are basically first-come, first serve.
