I recently upgraded to Captain at my corporate jet job and am happy to have finally accomplished that. However, only accumulating about 200 hours per year PIC. Since I am a relatively low time civilian guy, (mixture 135 Safety Officer, and some 91)should I jump to an ACMI and hope to upgrade on heavy equipment in a few years or just keep building PIC where I am and then re-evaluate after I log my 1000th hour of jet PIC time? (Reason I ask is some of my non FedEx friends say even if I get interview in a few years I would not be hired without a ton of total time or some heavy time.)

DO NOT go ACMI with that. You'll be getting the same thing on a 767 AFTER upgrade at an ACMI. Your best bet is to grind out as many hours as you can. Get your 1000 PIC and then go ACMI. Upgrade times would be at least two years everywhere then you'll start getting 200 a year PIC.

What’s your end goal? Do you want to be at FedEx or another 121 major? Do you have TPIC from a previous job?

flyguy2015 12-31-2018 05:42 PM

career goal is FedEx or UPS no previous TPIC

You'll need some TPIC. Plus some heavy time will look nice.

If you’re only flying 200 hours/year at your corporate job, you should consider something else that will get you more flight time. I was in your exact situation several years ago, and left my PIC corporate job for a regional. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it definitely advanced my career quicker.

Wow!! Thanks for that!

It's a minimum requirement and probably need a lot more than that to be competitive but there's always the few that get it with just near that.

Don't bother going to an ACMI, it's a largely unnecessary step...unless you enjoy starting out at bottom seniority all over again, learning a new airline and their way of doing things, etc. Stay at your regional, log TPIC, and if your application looks good, FedEx will call you.

What are competitive civilian minimums these days?
