I will go in and take out the no reserve since there are plenty of trips. Hopefully simplifying and already simple set of requests!

Any buffer issues?

What did your intermediate solution come out as? How many CH?

My guess is that trip needed to go to someone junior to allow them to get a line that works and at the same time getting you a line that works. If I were you, I'd put an insite in prior to the final solution and ask them why it didn't work. I usually have gotten an answer in plain English as to why the solution (intermediate or final) was the way it was.

Also, be careful if you take out AVOID RESERVE if you don't want it, you may get reserve. One thing I have learned is you always need a backup plan. So, if you don't want reserve, put down AVOID RESERVE, but then put down AVOID RA, AVOID RB and AVOID R24 (labeled RSV) in some order. I say that with the following thought process:

If you don't mention reserve, you may just get it.

However, if you put down AVOID RESERVE - Computer gonkulates and realizes it can't build you a legal line without reserve of some type; you will get the "Would not respect Line constraint".
So now if you don't list anything else, it will give you a block of reserve at its choosing (trying to abide by higher ranked preferences and what is left in OT)

AVOID RA - At this point you are saying, "Ok, if I need to sit reserve, please don't give me RA"
If the SLG can build you a line without RA it will, but it will be a cr@pshoot if you will sit R24 or RB. So, then you will have to tell it your next priority.
AVOID RB - Now at this point you are saying, "Ok, if I need to sit reserve, please don't give me RA or RB"

Again, line constraints may force it to give you RB, but at least you avoided RA or whatever your order is.

I usually am in the 50-ish % of the SLG lines. Picking specific trips is typically worthless with few exceptions (layover in my home city being one). So, for me I have few DESIRES and a lot more AVOIDs in my preferences.

Is there any way to find out what you got on your secondary line before Wednesday? I tried going to deviations and didn’t see anything.

USMCFDX 10-22-2018 05:15 AM

Should show up Tuesday sometime. Watch for the trips to clear from open time. Also, your reasons report and line report will publish sometime before secondary lines officially release.

Seems like the jumpseat calendar will populate on Tuesday before anywhere else. That’s the only place I’ve found for a preview since SLG implementation.

Deviation trick still works.

busdriver12 10-22-2018 10:11 AM

Under the old system, trips would clear from open time generally Mon night-Tues night at the latest. The last couple of months that I've checked, the trips don't clear from open time until exactly at VTO release on Wed.

So if the trips are still in open time, with nobody's name on it, can you still check your deviation screen and see the trips early? Unless they are just assigning them early for the 777's.

You can log onto the Vector App and see your November trips, at least I can see mine as of an hour ago.

Well finally that crappy Vector app is good for something. I noticed they took away the trips from open time this month, so I suspect that is the trigger.

Yes. Once most or all OT in a seat goes away, the secondaries are built and those trips are assigned. After that, polling individual trips for one's name, looking at deviations & deadheads section of VIPS or vector are all options.

Unfortunately, it looks like 777 FO and maybe both 67 seats in MEM didn't make the cutoff before quitting time today. As of 1845 MEM time, OT is still full. Bummer.

As for "Would not respect Line constraint" message, as I have been told it basically says the program could not build you a line by using that preference and keep all the other constraints that are put into your line. These could include:
Min Max Credit Hours
1 in 7/10 limits
8 in 24

Buffers
Previous preferences
etc etc

Basically all that stuff that is invloved in creating a legal line.

Now there is ONE HUGE point that one needs to realize. The system works through building a line in seniority order going though each of their preferences as a if-then statement. In other words, the program asks "If I give him/her this preference, can I build them a line. If yes, it *will then* be honored, moves on to your next preference, and asks the same question. If not, it gives a reason why not and moves on to your next preference.

Now the HUGE POINT is once it *finishes* off with you it goes to the next person and starts the process over again with what is left over in Open Time. Now by the time it gets to the most junior secondary line holder, there may be very little left over in OT to build them a legal line with all of those line constraints. (For example, it could be back to back RB-RA reserve or trips that can't turn to others.) Sure, the system could build a small CH line that is legal and have the company buy that person up to the min CH, but that wouldn't be fair to have the most senior pilot fly a full line and a junior guy flying less than the min and having his CH bought up. So, as I understand it, instead of doing this, the computer then works its way back up the seniority list getting that junior guy a barely legal line. But by doing that it affects someone more senior who already had that pairing. This process then continues until everyone has a legal line that meets line constraints.

Unfortunately, this is not the way the company is using the SLG. Even if you are the #1 bidder for VTO lines and bid a legal request that the optimizer says is fine, futures has the final say on what you get. The "line constraints" are not always obvious things that create illegal trips. Sometimes they are just the needs of the company over yours.
