Fume Events

I've been a lurker on this site for over 10 years and hardly ever post. Left seat wide body with 20 plus years.

I hate to post a downer, but there doesn't seem to be much information or concern over the fume events (dirty socks smell) that most of us have experienced over the years.

Couple weeks ago I flew an airplane that had multiple fume events throughout the flight. We didn't go on oxygen because the intensity came and went. In the past I have 'blown off' any concern about these events but I came across the below pasted article recently and I'm concerned that we don't treat this seriously.

By the way, I filled out multiple reports on my recent experience, but got no feedback.

Thoughts?

Did you make an AML entry? Did you include Fume Event in the entry? Did you file an ALPA Fume Event report?

If you read his post, he said he filled out multiple reports, with no response.

I think that ALPA has an "ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN." Seems like this would be right up his "alley."

Sadly, I just saw his retirement announcement, so I don't know who will be watching now.

Eric Tellman was the Spirit FO on the trip mentioned in the article. He took the lead on Industry awareness of this all too common, but often swept under the rug problem. He was the Environmental Committee Chairman for Spirit and I believe has recently taken on a similar role with ALPA National.

Spirit took steps to resolve the issue, but Fume Events still seem to be occurring. They changed oils, started using upgraded cabin air filters and implemented Fume Event procedures guidelines.

For awhile JetBlue was changing engines after every event, but eventually ran out of spares. (Told to me by a JetBlue Pilot, so not first hand knowledge.)
