I'm a recent new hire. There were a couple people in my class who mentioned having important life events coming up (baby, wedding, etc). All the managers from the various departments that came to speak to us all gave very strong indications that they will work with you around these types of situations.
Skipping a class date would seem unwise based on the sentiments they gave to our class. Food for thought.

JK...when I was offered the job long time ago, the Purple Nugget program was in full effect. I told my bride, I may be gone a few more days a month in order to commute to Anchorage. And her reply was, “So, stay at Comair making 17k/yr.”
