a little over 15 years ago, when I was a new hire, I told all my sponsors that I was going to move to MEM for my 1st few years.
While I was in indoc, one of my buds called and asked if I was still moving to MEM. I told him, not on my life! He asked when I made the decision. I told him when I was 20 miles from MEM on the drive in.
Don't buy a house or move for a few months. It hasn't gotten better with time, that's for sure.

I've spent most of my life in North MS, so my roots are already pretty much set, but if I was making a fresh start and looking for a place to move to, it would be Oxford, MS. Awesome college town with tons of stuff to do, whether you're an Ole Miss fan or not. And it's arguably close enough to sit reserve at home......

Well I actually grew up in Memphis and lived in the area for 50 plus years till a year ago. I can tell you yes there are many good people trying to make a living. I echo what TonyC said under no circumstances buy in Memphis or it's reserve area. I would also not buy anything south of Poplar in Collierville or Germantown, there is a reason the prices are lower than on the North side. I grew up close to Arlington and Lakeland and it can be a good fit for some. I would avoid Bartlett IMHO it will be the next Cordova. North MS can be ok but the new Mall up there might change things. I do have friends that live in mid town and down town and love it but it's not for me.
I will say after leaving you simply become numb to the killings and violence in Memphis and it's not until you leave to realize how bad it was. I would rent first and see if family can deal with the change before I bought anything. Feel free to PM me if yo want more info.
BTW Welcome aboard.

I have no plans of moving to Memphis but would certainly like to visit. We might have an opportunity this year if the doctor says it's ok to finally head down to Texas for a late season.
Are the tourist areas bad? Where are these killings and violence? Have visitors been killed? Please don't say I can't go to Graceland!
And I recall an open invitation to the AOC. Is it still true? Surely it's safe there?
