Hey Shaman do you have kids? Maybe 8 or 10 or 12 years old?

I've lived in areas like midtown and downtown, and I know that one street over means one WORLD over.

Not dogging you, I know it works for a lot of my friends. Just saying that guys making a choice based on young kids pretty much means they are ruling out everything inside the 240 loop.

Again, it's all on someone's situation. Young couple with no kids - go for midtown or mud island. Got two young kids - best be looking at Memphis base housing.

We have a 10 year old at home. There are many families with young children of all ages living inside the 240 loop. They send their children to private schools like Grace St. Luke's, Hutchison, MUS, Lausanne, and even public schools like Snowden, Idlewild,
And White Station. These are good schools that offer everything public schools in those outside the beltway areas and more. Have a look at college acceptances at a place like Lausanne or MUS. Those two places cost a pretty penny but for some it's more than worth it and a great thre majority of those families don't live in the areas mentioned by others in this thread.

It just depends on what you want for yourself and your family.

The whole place like that isn't accurate at all. Advising people to simply write off the whole place will give people a false idea of what available here.

Again im not digging on anyone else's choices im just offering additional information based on my experience and those of other families we know.

Not only that, there are also efforts underway to de-annex several areas. Just the same, I'd stay away. The damage has already been done to schools, property values, malls, other retailers, etc.

I am surprised no one mentioned Olive Branch MS. It has good schools, quiet neighborhoods, little crime has a small tow atmosphere, and was voted one of the top 10 places to live in the U.S. by Business Insider. It is only 9 miles from my house to Ops. The housing prices are low and you get a lot for your money. New subdivisions are popping up on the south side of the town. You do pay state income tax but the property taxes are much lower than Memphis. I have a 3400 sq ft house on 1 1/2 acres on a lake I fish 30 ft from my back door and pay only $2000/ yr in property tax so for me taxes are a wash. The same can be said for Hernando.

If you don’t mind me asking, what does state income tax run you? I hear to live in SC on a FedEx Capt salary it’s about $20K/yr.

Yeah... Probably $10k for an FO and $15-20k for a widebody Captain. The sales tax is lower in Mississippi too... Ever notice how busy that 302 is in Southaven?

Still... I like the TN side better. Your kids get Hope Scholarship because of the lottery...

Just ask your family where they want to live then commute for the rest of your career. Commuting is pretty easy with the staging protection, number of jumpseats available (although a few problem cities) and deviation bank from deadhead travel. Besides, if you go on a long trip, you are leaving your family in a town they may not want to be in.

My spouse has been very happy living close to family and friends when I'm off on a 5 to 12 day trip. Now I have enough seniority to hold "double deadhead trips" so I'm basically getting paid to commute into position. I rented a crashpad for 8 years and left because I rarely used it. I can count on one hand the times I buy a hotel in Memphis per year. I use the hotels with van service to or from the terminal, AOC or Module C although noisy during the launch.

Unless you have a desire to get into training or management, live where you want to live!
