Default Where to live near Memphis?

Hello folks. I’ve had the great fortune of passing my interview with FedEx and am awaiting my background check. My wife and I are heavily considering moving to the Memphis area. Any suggestions about where to live/rent? We have a 14 month old daughter and want a safe and fun community. We are looking at renting a house for the first year or two. Thank for the input!

Drop me a PM for inside information on the perfect family house about to go on the market in Lakeland -- #1 Elementary School in the state!

Congratulations on getting past the interview. Pro pilot pretty much nailed it. Germantown and Collierville are more suburban with stuff close by. I am in Lakeland and like it. Not as rural as Fayette county but it is not as suburban. It just depends on what you like. As you probably know, the company will pay for your move within the first 18 months. Again, congratulations!

Great info. Thank you. FedEx will pay for a move? Any further details on that would be appreciated.

Congratulations!

Millington is about a 45 min drive to the airport, and a safe (I know that’s very subjective from one person to another), and a smaller town. I know several other pilots who live in the Millington area and like it. Atoka/Munford (Tipton County) is just a few more minutes north and better schools with a nice community.

We originally looked at Collierville/Germantown area, but found you can sure get a lot more house for the money in The Millington/Atoka/Munson area. I’ve also flown with a lot of folks who live in Olive Branch (Mississippi) and really like it there. Lakeland and Arlington both have lots of folks from FedEx living there, and the schools are good there.

Section 6 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) explains it all. I believe they cover up to 16,500 lbs. If you are a family of three you should have no issues. They box, move, and unpack for you. If you put things in storage they will pay for 90 days. That is the jist of it. It is a nice benefit.

If you look in the North MS area, I’d recommend Olive Branch or Southaven, but stay south of Highway 302 (Goodman Rd). Lewisburg is the new up and coming area with what I believe are the highest ranked schools in the state. Hernando is also very nice. MS will have you paying $95-115/sq ft. Also, there is a State Income Tax.

The Germantown, Collierville, and Piperton areas would be at the top of my list for TN. But you’ll be paying $120-150/sq ft. No State Income Tax. Typically good school systems in those areas as well.

Almost anywhere other than Memphis would be a good place to rent for a year while you acclimatize, explore, and decide where you'd best fit in long term. Bartlett wasn't mentioned, but it's in the Lakeland/Arlington direction, and will likely have more rental options.

When you're settling on a permanent place, add Memphis "reserve" to the list of places to avoid. Most of unincorporated Shelby County is designated as "reserve" for one of the incorporated cities within the county. (Memphis, Millington, Bartlett, Lakeland, Arlington, Germantown, and Collierville). Unincorporated areas which are very nice tend to decline rapidly when annexed by Memphis, and by tend to I mean always have. Any of the other city reserves should be OK.

If you're looking for good things here, you'll find them. Conversely, if you look for the bad, you'll find it. There are plenty of things to keep a young family busy. Welcome! Enjoy.
