I am pretty sure the conversation for MD and FDAs goes: Hello, is is John Hamhands there? Oh John Congratulations this is FDX and we would like to offer you a class on 1 June for a MD-11 FO position. If that isnít what you want we we be glad to call you when something else comes up. Can we expect you on 1June?

Thatís my understanding. So Iím not sure where the rub is. From what ALPA redacted itís hard to guess.

So as a new hire in a job that hundreds of others would love to be at this person is complaining about what airplane he’s flying? Sounds like a miserable person just looking for a fight. Be gone and find someone else to fill this slot who appreciates what and where they’re at. When he was a kid was he always complaining his sibling got a better Christmas present? Seriously, there are much bigger issues to be addressed and this is NOT one of them. If this person is complaining about his situation as a brand new hire there are other airlines hiring with more varied narrowbody fleets and other pilots happy to fill your slot here at FDX. It’s like commuting on a offline Jumpseat. I don’t care what seat as long as I have a seat to work or go home. I don’t complain I didn’t get an exit row or first class seat. You take what you can get and maybe next time it’ll be different, but in the mean time be thankful and humble for what you have. You don’t have much investment here so you can start over somewhere else.

Hired in 2016 and this was the practice at the time. We received a call asking if we’d like an MD (FDA Was probably similar but our class didn’t have any FDA slots). Typical response, “Yes”. By saying yes you were being hired directly to a wide body airframe at FDX and we didn’t know what aircraft would be available in a drop or when we would be called for a class. You didn’t say no because you didn’t want to find out what was behind the “No Door”. MD folks showed one day early and thus we had seniority over others who started the next day. No one complained. We were all very happy to be hired at FDX. But I guess when your ego is tied to the plane you fly you’ve lost perspective and cry about it.

If he was called and asked if he’d accept a specific position and said “Yes” I don’t see what the issue is. There’s no way to know if he’d have been in that same class if he said no.

The people in charge did not care about the abrogation of my seniority, they only cared about getting their over 60 buddies back in the left seat. The company and the union manipulated the bids to do just that. If we had not had agency shop, 50% of the FO's would have quit in protest.
This, a thousand times.

If this pilot is still on probation and tried to file a grievance as stated he/she probably will never finish probation.

They're new hires, not full union members. Are we really grieving this?

We may not know the full story here, maybe best to just wait and see. Whoís to say this is someone on probation and not a guy or gal from as early as 2015? (I suppose theyíre still considered new hires to some).

I was a Sunday (vs Monday) hire, it seemed to work fine. Was grateful for it, woulda been the caboose for two weeks.. instead it was just for a night (didnít get the vest though... maybe thatís the real issue here).

They didn't have the vest when I was hired.

It started as a toy caboose on a lanyard, then evolved into a vest.

Whoever gets to wear it, should wear it with pride.

I think it is a fine tradition.

Itís interesting that FedEx new hire seniority methods are being scrutinized. I like that FDX and DAL use a random number (last 4 SSN) and donít age discriminate like AA, UAL, and UPS to determine seniority. I understand the logic that the younger folks have more time to improve seniority over their career. However, thatís still age discriminating since new pilots all walk in the door the same day and time for INDOC (at AA and UAL) and they are rank ordered based on their birth date.

IMHO, FDX is speeding with their split class method (much like UPS) and hopefully they get called on it. Non standard policies that exist to benefit the company seem like reasonable issues to grieve. The idea that said pilot gets **** on relentlessly for calling them on this is absurd. Maybe heís actually content on the MD now, but wants to make it better for other new hires behind him? I have no clue, donít know him, so Iíll keep an open mind and let the grievance take its course.
