I completely agree with you, I was just saying that the person involved thinks that since they were in the same "new hire class" that he must think they should all be in seniority order according to that classification. I don't think this has anything to do with the 777 bid as someone mentioned above if he was going to FDA, that's a moot point, but I'm thinking he wanted the 777 over the MD. Not sure why this is even filed as a grievance.. Must be something we are not seeing..

Actually, during age 65, 30 people junior to me were excessed into the seat I wanted to bid, so, yes. I went to Alpa for relief, and they said, "too bad, you should have bid it when you had the chance". That chance was the bid just prior to the age change, and I thought, "I'll wait one more bid", then age 65 hit. Had I known, I would have bid it.
The people in charge did not care about the abrogation of my seniority, they only cared about getting their over 60 buddies back in the left seat. The company and the union manipulated the bids to do just that. If we had not had agency shop, 50% of the FO's would have quit in protest.
The manipulation and the 30 people junior to me in my Captain's seat cost me easily $500,000 over 5 years.
This is when I really understood that Alpa is run by the people in power and their friends, and they all operate on the "I've got mine" principle.

You act like you don’t have a choice to go to the MD. You always have the choice of going to a different carrier. If it’s such a burden, it’s probably a good idea. Maybe you can demand that Delta place you in the 777.
Seriously? You pick up seniority by showing a day early and you complain? Dumbest.Grievence.Ever....
I’ve been hoping the union would start enforcing the contract, but we grieve this BS?

That being said, this entire issue would be self solving by some contractual changes. One option would be putting the 777 in its own category. Most realize that the earning potential on the A300, 767, and MD11 are fairly similar with a slight advantage to the MD11 perhaps due to some international flying. The earning potential on the 777 is greater than the others. Being senior doesn’t matter if your seniority is so unportable. Or they could just quit putting new hires in the 777 which would end this seniority abrogation.
This grievance isn’t the way to fix these issues, in my opinion but obviously not ALPA’s, but it highlights that pilots are frustrated with this. I’m hoping they know more than I’m seeing.

Or how about no more of this hand selected BS. Start everybody at same time. Bid what you want. If nobody bids it then roll it to the next class. If you can’t get thru training.. Then bye, bye. With an ATP, if you can’t pass, then you don’t belong flying Heavies!

Do the people who go the the MD or FDA actually show up to class a day early? Or do they just show up with everyone else on day one of indoc? That may be the reason for the grievance. Maybe ALPA wants to change so that everyone bids whatever is available rather than being hand picked?

If they’ve changed this then it’s news to me. I see the gripe if they all start at the same time and can’t bid. If you start a day early and the only positions are MD, well seems like that’s that. It’s a work around that I thought was contractually sound as far as I knew.

Please save my union dues and our limited number of grievances that can be flied for REAL issues. Get hired and be happy with what you get. Worry about doing a good job and getting off probation, not about the grass being greener somewhere else on property. Plenty of time for that later.
