Makes sense with the tariffs in China and no more Amazon. Stocks down slightly too.
Nice rumor!

Skytrucker01 10-18-2019 04:10 AM

Not a rumor really...

Make copies and give it to your peers, friends and family. If someone doesn't understand something, you've probably worded it wrong.

Any of the interview prep companies will make sure the app looks good. One isn't really better than another. Emerald Coast, Cage Marshall, Checked and Set, Centerline. Take your pick. From personal experience I can say that Centerline will review ALL of your apps, not just one.

People have their apps checked now?

Yes, and have been for many years now. It only takes a simple error to remove your app from consideration. Money well spent IMO.

I should of used an app service. I found numerous errors in my app including a big one when updating flight time. I forgot to change the year flown on the airplane, so it now appeared I was not current.

My app had several errors and I didn’t get it reviewed and still got a call. Now what’s the rumor about a hiring freeze? For how long?

This. You are talking about a multi million $$ career. For a reasonable fee, it could make the difference between getting the call or not.

It is a substantial over-reaction to a single statement made by the one of the VPs on an internal company business update in mid September.

"Hiring – you’ll see the pilot hiring taper off for the next several months as we act to prevent over-staffing and we are further refining the training scheduling of our existing pilot cadre."

The company training honcho also said, in a separate message that followed,

"we could expect changes to our airline that might require some rebalancing of some fleets"

You'll also note this is coming during peak season, when hiring and training generally throttle back to keep as many pilots out flying the line as possible.

The end is not near, it is not a "hiring freeze". If you want to fly for Purple, keep the apps in and updated regularly.

Word on the street is no classes for 6-9 months after November. Interviews are continuing in November.

The ole crewbus rumor mill churns quite hard.

Fact: there is zero known data on when classes will begin again after peak. It very well could be Jan. Or Jun.

I ask advice from pilots in only two main areas: conspiracy theories and financial advice. Do you have anything in those areas? ;)

Recent interviews were told to expect a class in Jan. Don't know if that will hold true or not but I would expect Feb classes at the latest.

I don’t understand the purpose of paying someone to look at your app. What new information can they give you? You either fill in the block or you don’t and you either have the quals or you don’t. Is there a super secret cheat code that if you select the exact right number of boxes it shoots it direct to the hiring board? Other than proofreading what service do they provide and what advantage do they give?

PolicyWonk 10-30-2019 01:38 PM

A super qualified friend of mine applied in the days of bubble sheets. He was always selected to be an instructor early in each military assignment. He didn't read our app carefully enough however. He separated his PIC and instructor time incorrectly. Because he had less than the minimums in non-instructor PIC, he didn't get to the threshold for the interview. He was supposed to add his instructor time to PIC.

As it was, UPS snagged him. And they got a really good deal by virtue of having him work for them - in spite of his demonstrated bubble sheet weaknesses.

I think it very prudent to have an informed person look it over.

It's the same reason a Captain has an FO. Occasionally, even the best of us make mistakes, and we can be completely blind to it. Having someone else checking can save your life... or your career. If that's not intuitively obvious, FedEx might not be your best fit.

I’m not saying don’t have someone look over your app but what advantage does paying someone $300 give you to do it up over anyone else?

Many apps are screened and picked by a computer. People who specialize in this stuff can spot things that may flag a computer but not the human eye. They are also useful in tailoring your app to what a specific airline is looking for.

Then don't. Your money, your decision.

No they can’t. They are selling you a product and have convinced you that they can do something special so that you give them $300. Conveniently the whole system is not transparent so you have no way to verify if they actually helped you or not.

Cool, good luck with that!

That’s what I used to always say to the guys I flew with at the regionals that refused to pay for app reviews, job fairs, resume development, etc. I happily encouraged them, as it was less competition for me.

Many of them are still there, quite senior CAs still trying to move on. Meanwhile, I’m making more than twice as much and work half as hard. Well worth a bit of investment!
