End of career vacation buyback
Going to be hanging up the epaulets later this year and want to be sure I don't screw this up.
ALPA's checklist says that you can't be on an active status on your last day as that will limit your vacation buyback to 40%. I assume that means you can't be on a trip but how about having a vacation award that begins the day before you retire?

I had a similar issue this year. I did an INSITE and the Vac lady canceled the Vac period for me so I didn’t have to deal with it.
If you retire on the 31st, an NQN line starts there onto infinity. Last day of work is 30th.
There is a document on pfc under bidding that explains what happens with trips and vacations in the bid month you retire. Shows examples of vacation starting before the NQN and after NQN.
In my case I had a vacation and trips just after the start of NQN. They process the vacation first then conflicts w NQN that put hours in GMU (not CIC). It looked complicated for bidding so I asked them just to remove the Vac period to make it easier.

i just retired this past December 17th at age 65. Whatever your date at 65 or the December 31 day, plan your last trip to be done a few days before your exit date. You can’t be active and retired on the same day. In my case I finished up my last trip on the 13th. Any trips that are after your NQN date will be lost so bid accordingly.
As far as vacation buy back, my check came towards the end of December but definitely in the same year I retired. I called benefits and asked about the 40K bonus money for giving the company the 1 year advanced notice and the DSA buy back. She said that money will be payed out in January 2020 as the company has to figure out what that money is. Assuming you hit all the gates.
One last thing for those pilots that are over 60. Most pilots understand that once you drop your letter you get the bonus money (if your entitled to it) and that if for ANY reason you pull your letter (new car, boat, plane, wife, whatever) you forfeited the bonus money. What a lot of pilots DON’T understand is that you also forfeited the DSA buyback program. Giving the company notice your going to retire is a two-fur notice. So chose, but chose wisely. In my case since I do have a full DSA, had I chose to pull my letter earlier in life than I would have forfeited 150K. 40k bonus money plus the 110K max DSA. Yes I know we got kicked by our union on the DSA but that’s neither hear nor there. Good luck with all the pilots that will be retiring in the next couple of years. Life’s not so bad but I’m still getting use to it. Cheers.
