Dont think anyone is saying that. The statistics very much show healthy people are not being affected by this anymore than the common cold or flu. If you have someone with a compromised immune system, this thing can kill them, but so can the flu, or any other virus.

At some point way down the road, this virus will not be viewed as anything bigger than the flu or any other seasonal bug. The argument can be made the flu is far more dangerous because it has a much larger effect on children and younger people.

The lack of virulence amongst children is an important point. Even with similar R0 values a virus that children get readily is far more likely to spread rapidly since it’s so difficult to get kids to wash hands, cover coughs etc. If this virus truly isn’t infecting kids (or maybe it is but they’re largely asymptomatic) that could help to drastically limit its spread.

Surprised they will draft you for a China trip after you said you would not do it on reserve. But if they are short all bets are off. Good luck dropping R days. Better chance dropping them over Christmas!

The draft was not a China trip.

Now if the pilots family members have a compromised immune system then they can opt out of China and get draft on a Europe trip or middle east.

Tell that to the HKG pilots who have to burn sick days or vacation to get a paycheck if they’re avoiding China. Lots of new hires that have little of either so they are forced to fly to China if they want to get paid. There aren’t “Europe or Middle East” trips in that bidpack, just China.

Like most other things we have negotiated we are a day late and a dollar short.

Yep, we should have fought harder for a better OIM that paid 150% for all China flying if the company is making this much coin from it. Typical for us not to know the value of what we're giving away around here!

150% still isn’t enough, especially given the risk to crew members, their friends and family and the constant ringer you go through when traveling plus the cost of shipping almost doubled.

Those in the CDG base can now make the same argument. Should they get overrides? Should they be able to opt out? Now that we have cases in the US should we not have the same overrides for going into cities that have infected people? Should we have overrides? Why not just give everyone 150% and call it fair and even as this thing spreads all over the globe. Should we just shut down ops to all CDC level 3 or higher areas? If we did this you might as well tell the bottom 1,000 guys/gals to find a food bank to get in line for. Look how just a few flights being stoped at UA is demolishing their 777 flying. Be careful what you ask for with something that can be operated safely with lowered risk.

There’s a difference between a country with a few cases which is most now and the country of origin with a much higher magnitude of cases in comparison.
But I really don’t care about chasing money. I want to see a method to simply pay protect our pilots who opt to avoid the serious hot zones. As a corollary, if you incentivize those who are willing to accept the risk, then the freight moves, the company makes money and some of our pilots are not forced to take risks they can’t or choose to be isolated from their families for potentially months. Here’s some perspective from one of our new HKG pilots:

1) I am not thrilled at the idea of getting quarantined in China
2) I have evacuated my family due to concerns about access to healthcare and panic
3) now my family is staying at the only inexpensive place they can stay, my mother-in-law's. My mother-in-law has COPD (which was mentioned in the article and is the all encompassing term that replaced emphysema).

So now that I have almost exhausted my sick and vacation banks, I am in Asia to stay and cannot see my family for the duration.
