The USPS isn’t going anywhere. It’s mandated by the US Constitution so it’ll take a Constitutional Amendment to get rid of it which will never happen.

It actually just gives congress the authority to establish one, doesn't mandate that one exists, or that it should be run by the government.

I can't get past the paywall, but I'm curious what is brewing with USPS and the suggestion that FedEx and UPS could start delivering mail directly to people's mailboxes. Any big brains have some insight?

A couple things to remember about the USPS....it's a constitutional service. It ain't EVER going away, even though it's not the cabinet level department it once was. Not even Amtrak has that kind of mojo.

That doesn't stop the various political players from making it look better or worse than it really is. That includes hijinks with accounting and statistics. No different than the hyperventilating people do over Amtrak.

Amtrak is generally unprofitable over its long haul routes. For 90% of the population, spending 4 days to get from east to west is nothing but a big waste of time. Where Amtrak kills it is on short haul routes where it has an advantage over any other kind of transportation. That said, any attempt to truncate the long haul service is met with a ridiculous level of opposition, regardless of the level of air and or other transportation service.

You try to shut down the Post Office in Nowhere, Nebraska, population 101, and you will get an unbelievable amount of pushback. To be fair, the law requires that the USPS provide same level of service to everyone, everywhere at the same price.

I used to think visiting any USPO was an exercise in frustration, then I tried to mail something from the local UPS depot, and was met with a similar level of, ahem, service.

I wasn't able to read the article, and not willing to sign up. But I guess the way I read the headline is that FedEx would potentially be able to deliver straight into mailboxes, something that only the USPS has been able to do up to this point.

Bottom line, I'm curious how that would positively or negatively affect FedEx. If USPS takes a hit but we carry their mail, does that also hurt us? Or wouid this benefit us since we can now just cut out the middle man and deliver more mail straight into mailboxes? If we lose the USPS contract next year, is this a way to soften the blow?
