there's always contractor red air if you're still itching to put on the G-suit.

I know mil pilots aren’t hourly but they certainly seem to live a decent life.
I’m quite sure that civilian gov pilots (CBP, JPATS, USFS, etc) certainly get paid hourly for almost every moment they are involved with work. I’ve worked around those folks on and off for a long time and none of them seemed to whine about unpaid work.
Side note: it’s violation of fed law for a civilian fed employee to work without pay.
That wasn’t my experience...

I did that.
Awesome job.
But still contract work.
Gave that up for stability.

I don't think that's true. When I was a GS-13, I earned plenty of "comp time." I was working not for pay, but for time off. It may be a fine line, but there were plenty of times in a pay week that I had hours worked which weren't paid.

Nothing could be further from the truth. I worked significantly harder in several areas, including the flying in the Navy (flying is only about 1/3 of the job). All of my civil jobs have been cake by comparison.

Semantics.
You were compensated as you pointed out.

When I just graduated high school I worked summer for Social Security as a file clerk, GS-1. Made 3 cents per hour above minimum wage.

When we got off the elevator, we were in the locked elevator lobby. At 5 minutes before the appointed time, one of the supervisors unlocked the doors, so we were able to go to our desks. At the appointed start time we were told we could start work, not a second before.

At 5 minutes before the end of the day, we all had to stop work and stand at the elevator lobby doorway. At the appointed time we all had to file out into the elevator lobby. Within 1 minute we all had to be out, and the door was locked behind us.

During the work hours I will not tell you about the volume of work or the quality of work that was done. Just say some of the clerks hated me for doing my job.

I'll agree with that part.
