Really?? He identified a problem. Whats his solution? keep whining and moaning, "oh poor us.....our union won't listen to what the real problems are....." This is new??? Is the thread starter going to run for an MEC position to try and change things? Is he trying to rally the troops to make the union voice stronger??? Trying to get this group to speak as one is like trying to herd cats.....the last voice that did that was George Sees......and that was 25 years ago.......good luck.....

VEBA was, if I remember right, basically a union due to cover the cobra payments for guys who had to retire at 60 and cover them until medicare kicked in. We were paying for guys who had a career at fedex knowing that they would retire at 60. Why should we have been covering Cobra payments for guys who should have planned for an age 60 retirement? Add to that the last contract only pays a bonus to guys who were 54 at the time of signing who give a years notice of retirement. And by bonus, I believe there was another $40K paid to guys on top of the full sick bank bonus.

Feel free to read the ALPA source document discussing VEBA here instead of trying to remember.

Yes the age related bonus is another ALPA screw job, but we keep voting in these age related provisions.

Thumbs down

The thread starter joined APC a week ago, put in a few token comments, and now has a very controversial post inviting some good ol' infighting right before openers?

I say troll or someone with the best interest of management at heart.

I have no issue with any of his post and have the same feelings, troll or no troll.

Based on the first post content and the name, I believe this person may have run for MEC chair and block rep recently.

VEBA
A major use of the concept was implemented in 2007 when the United Auto Workers agreed to form VEBAs for their workers at the Big Three automobile manufacturers, thus relieving the companies from carrying the liability for their health plans on their accounting books.
Try again
Alpa source document? Really, ALPA source documents only serve what ALPA wants you to know.

From what I understand, our VEBA is an account funded by FedEx, tax free, for the purposes of reimbursing us for part of our Medicare costs, post age-65. Personally, I donít see this as a senior versus junior issue. As a junior person, I look forward to being able to benefit from this just like I do for the pension.

Even if itís as you describe, I still wouldnít have a problem with it. If it incentivized pilots retiring before 65, I feel itís a good thing. My seniority progression will accelerate and I may be able to use that benefit if I choose to retire early as well.

The current VEBA is different from the 2007 contract. The current one everyone participates.

The VEBA that I and others do not like was given to pilots who had reached age 53 by contact signing. They had an account funded by the company and money that was to go to the crew force for wet leasing outside of three months allowed. $25k was put into each pilots accounts that could be used for health care expenses after retirement. The money grew with time. Was supposed to be a bridge between mandatory 60 retirement and Medicare at 62.

Then the age changed and they all got to keep the $25k even if they stayed until 65. Great deal for them. Screw job for everyone else. Flew with a guy awhile back and he said his account had grown to $33k.

Cutoutís for senior pilots here never seem to end. I am will be senior with the next contract so the cutouts will probably end then!

I'm guessing a clerk for Ford and Harrison. We've had them on here before.
