I would think we are much higher than the national average, as there is a direct correlation between vaccination rate and education. Everybody here has at least a Bachelors degree. And the fact that we travel a lot, often to places where we’d never wish to be sick or test positive would put some doubters over the edge.

As Israel and the UK have already discovered, and the US will undoubtedly figure out in the near future, being vaccinated doesn’t mean you aren’t going to get COVID. A very high percent of new COVID cases in Israel and the UK are people who are “fully vaccinated”. In fact, the UK just hit a tipping point where a majority of new COVID cases (and they just had 50,000 yesterday) are vaccinated people. So anyone who thinks their vaccine is going to prevent them from spending a couple weeks in the Chinese gulag is sadly misinformed.

While I am too busy in my personal life to do anything extra at this moment, put me in the "Who Cares?" camp on this one. Sorry but the hotel probably has an obligation to check for signs of Covid after any American stays there due to our high number of cases. They don't want their workers spreading extra cases of Covid. China has taken this pretty serious and if someone does have Covid there is a pretty clear need for everyone involved to know.
If the company was aware of it then they should've let us know but I fail to see this is as some massive conspiracy. In any event we do know now, so if this adjusts the game plan for those taking little precaution and traveling to a Communist country then so be it. If you're very concerned about it thankfully vaccines are free in America. You could get a J&J vaccine and be fully protected in 2 weeks. If you take the vaccine and still get quarantined then those are the breaks of flying internationally where they do care about you spreading it in countries that have fought hard to reduce cases and don't need us destroying their hard work.

Let's get back to the point of this thread.
DFT, AVA, or any other flying is protected in the contract, you can do it if you wish. If you wish not, that is also your right.
Conflating that issue with the CAN testing muddies the waters. CAN is going to do what they are going to do. The fact that the company knew and did not tell us, that's the problem. Others have said possible motivations, but to be clear I can think of no reason where they were putting their people first as the reason. This is concerning.
The fact that the union told us right away was the right thing to do and I thank them for letting us know.
Does this change my thought process when called next, most likely. Will I change my bidding strategy, again most likely. The one thing I did was call my reps and thank them for getting the information out to the pilots unfiltered.
Unity works both ways. I don't scold either of my puppies randomly. I scold then when one of them relieves itself on my new hand knotted oriental rug that I bought with all the extra money I have been earning. That is how the puppies know what upsets me. And when they learns what I am asking them to do, they get a lot of love. That is how things work. It really is just that simple. Admonish bad behavior, reward good behavior, wherever you find it.

Its really sad you have to spoon feed it to some people. We have too many within our pilot group that have the attitude that the company can do no wrong. Purple Kool-Aid drinkers is what many call them. It’s the same group that will do AVA, Draft and VBB while complaining about getting a contract and getting currently issues (such as this) fixed. We are our own worst enemies.

I don’t know, I’m wondering. Did a private entity do this, or the Chinese government? Would running bodily fluids tests in this country without your permission be legal in this country (unless done by the police), I doubt it. Then again, in China, perhaps anything done to anyone directed by the CCP is legal.

Maybe coordinating with the government would be a bit much... In China the gap between the government and a private entity is completely blurred so it's cut and dry there. There they can and will do whatever they want to you. The only thing they need to worry about is infuriating the company or pilot group (or both) so bad that we simply refuse to go there.
