Seward, AK
Super random question going hiking there soon but do a lot of ANC people live there ? How is it to live there full time ? How’s the drive to ANC in the winter months ?
Cheers! |

Cheers! Frankly, the road conditions can be treacherous. Weather, moose, darkness, two lanes undivided, it's no exaggeration when they describe that highway as one of the deadliest in Alaska. https://www.dangerousroads.org/north...d-highway.html And it doesn't happen every year but there are avalanches that close down the highway for days. One year, the town of Girdwood was literally cutoff for a week and supplies needed to be flown in by light aircraft. https://www.nytimes.com/2000/02/04/u...ds-alaska.html Personally I wouldn't consider commuting from Seward to ANC. |
Nope i was hoping guys like you and UPS chime in. Alaska guys if they have a base there. Always interested in people their stories. Also, where are the nice places to live / commute (drive ) from from ANC ? We recently started service to ANC again taking my better looking half there soon to go hiking so just interested in what people do who are based and living there

I don’t work at FedEx but have lived in AK. Most of the Seward/Homer, Kenai areas are gonna be nice. Think fishing towns with some summer tourism. The previous posters have pointed out most downsides. Palmer would probably be a better place to live in my opinion, but it’s alll about what you want to be close to.

I would say majority live no further north than Wasilla, Eagle River is closer and also nice but more expensive. Those that venture to the Kenai usually just have a cabin there.

Wasilla, Palmer and Big Lake are certainly contenters as well. The Hillside area of ANC can be very nice. Anything other than those places will involve >1 hr drive times in good weather. |
Seward is seasonal. Most people in Seward aren’t from there. The drive is major highways and should be as accessible as any major Alaskan highway. Iv’e only spent time there in the spring and summer months so take my safety advice with a grain of salt. Beautiful place.
