New Interview Format for 2022

Might be worth mentioning that FedEx recently updated their hiring process from a 2-day event (Day 1 - Computer Testing, Day 2 - Panel and Situational Based Interview) to a 1-day event. As far as I know, this will be brand new for 2022. The last group that interviewed in November still had the 2-day deal.

See Q7:

The computer testing will now be done remotely and you will just be in MEM for a one day event to complete the HR panel and SBI. They haven't officially announced that they are getting rid of the Job Knowledge Test, but if I were to guess, that might be the case as it was rumored to go away. It may just be the MMPI and Cog done remotely, which ironically mimics Delta's new interview process.

Discuss....

Been a rumor for a bit. But yes, it will be similar to Delta's day one to remain competitive.

And UPS’s too.

Any thoughts: College Degree will become “preferred” vs “required” as the pool of experience/bodies continues to become less and less. With all the early retirements around the industry last year, “pilot shortage” true or not has become the reality as the Majors and SWA show massive induction rates of 100-150 per month required for the foreseeable future.

Asking for several friends who are obviously focused on Brown and just starting measures for a degree. I know it’s a delineator of some sort, but it’s too bad they will most definitely end up at Brown or wherever like AA (N/A), UA, SWA as it’s just “preferred.”

*Before anyone says No! I am just reviewing how many minimums have dropped everywhere over the years. Yes, I have degree so I definitely am not asking for myself. Also have a Master’s which is completely useless at this time as I am more than quite content at my current outfit. (I say “current” as none of us know the future). I am absolutely positive that Graduate degree gathering dust in a box in the attic for over 15 years makes me the best pilot ever! :D

No and why should they? There are thousands that are trying to get here. The Legacy carriers and Majors don't have a shortage. It's the regionals I'd be worried about staffing.

Excellent point currently, and at your hiring rate those “thousands” will decrease over time. The CVD19 “escape to cargo” border crossing herds are much smaller migration’s comparably speaking. Not like they will wait more than a year or two especially after the mass exodus on the pax side which requires fulfillment now and for quite awhile with strongholds with well over five figures. Get a line number 2022 or 2023, etc. 9/11 had some parallels and this currently is resonating to be just after the lost decade. You are on point - Regionals will be hit hard and just today nearly 20% of flights canceled tonight/Christmas Eve by United and Delta collectively due to staffing, etc. Tomorrow is just additional numbers.

*Purple will always have a sufficient line around the block trying to get in as before this debacle but the line won’t be nearly as long and times have changed. It’s the experience loss as numbers come down and the entire pool drains. Better candidates choosing from 15,000 vs 2,000+, but if you only need 300 you’re right… Last time I checked the regionals didn’t require a degree. Overall, it was just a question and there is no need to drop the requirement right now of course I do agree. Future? Everything is circumstantial.

*My experience, last year was a spike in talent and exceptional attitudes and I hope it will continue. As high tide is over, what do you think as we prepare them for you to hire and you will. We will keep the churn up, but we could shrink is anybody’s guess and it’s hard not to see it as an ACMI that is always fluid. Water rationing is real. Quality water is too.

I still totally agree you have plenty of quality candidates, but Delta just dropped their degree requirement to “preferred.” Maybe it’s just to help with flow programs or something else as we discussed. It’s a no brainer as requirements have been dropping all over for awhile and I believe the demand is increasing. 2-300% pay being offered at the pax carrier’s as of recent (I know it’s the holiday pickup game, etc) as the flood gates to acceptance continue to grow. This type of climate should be more leverage to ensure your next contract will be robust to maintain that career destination. That’s definitely a positive.

Computerized test

I have been lucky enough to have been offered an interview. Can anyone who has interviewed recently describe what the computerized initial testing consists of? Thanks!

We all sign NDAs. So I'd recommend reaching out to your specific prep company for that info. Good luck!
