Class of service based on flight time contract limits not original flight / book first if you have the bank

You’re good for first class DUB-ORD. It’s based on the ticket you actually fly, not what was scheduled.

Buy the first class ticket if you have the bank. Whatever your scheduled ticket was is completely irrelevant, it’s what you’re actually flying. And obviously, such a long leg qualifies for higher class of service.

Also duty time. For example, hub turn MEM and immediately D/H home from an out station and you get FC if duty time is over 11+30. For some reason, a lot of pilots miss this one.

Actually, you don't have to deadhead home immediately. Just don't get a legal crew rest (8 hours) before your deadhead. That way you're on the same duty period. I do this all the time. Book a deadhead about 6-7 hours after scheduled block in time.

This is correct. You can even get more rest than you mentioned. Don’t forget that your duty continues for 30 minutes past the scheduled block in from your revenue flight and the 1 hour show (2 hours intl) count as well. So, you could schedule a flight 9+29 past the actual block in from your last revenue flight and still not have a legal rest.

Any one ever wonder why these rules exist? Why does the Company care where we sit on our way to or from work on a deviation (or if we want to pay for an upgrade on a scheduled)?

I really don’t understand why they attempt to limit the way the deviation bank can be spent. If you’ve got the bank, you’ve got the bank IMO.

The best I can come up with is the Company see the bank as THEIR money that they haven’t had to spend yet and we see it as OUR money that we haven’t had the chance to spend yet.

None of it changes the parameters that dictate what ticket they have to purchase for the scheduled. Although I do believe that should be adjusted as well. Get rid of these silly restrictions that are just a method of control and have no bearing in protecting the operation.

You actually stumbled across the answer to your question. Although there is a difference in how we view the money -- their money to save vs. our money to spend -- that's not the core reason. Yes, they certainly enjoy the fact that they can make you believe you have a benefit but they don't have to actually provide it, but the overarching motivation for The Company is always CONTROL. They will always cry about the money and claim they're too poor to give it to us. When economics are bad, they'll claim they're poor because of the economics. When economics are good, they'll claim they're poor because they've spent -- err, invested so much money in new infrastructure and new airplanes and buying that new company in Europe or whatever. Either way, they're always too poor to pay us.

But underneath it all, it's never about the money. It's always about control.
