Thanks for the help, gents! I still am new to this, and am not sure how to quote multiple people, but I appreciate the inputs from FDXLAG, FlyBoyd, Jumbo Pilot, 402215314 (That is a pretty original callsign, by the way!!) and gasnhaul.

Just got a note today for a 5 Dec start sate, so if I can swing it with my current bosses, I hope to see some of you around the coffee maker in just a few weeks!!

No worries brother! Welcome aboard...it really is a great place to be (without a doubt my first choice). You'll find the place is filled with a bunch of great folks to work with. Have fun (always), enjoy training and hopefully see ya on the line in the not too distant future!

Anyone starting class in Nov/Dec, when did you interview?

Cajun 11-17-2016 05:11 PM

FWIW concerning the timing...Several of us interviewed in mid October...I was offered a 5 Dec start date, but unable to take it due to military commitment. Everyone else in my interview class is now in the 8-9 Jan class...

What are some common deadheads you guys get?

I can only speak knowledgeably about the 757 bidpack in MEM and CGN, but we get DH trips on the front end, the back end, and for many trips both front and back, with a few mid-trip DH (more common in the international portion of the bidpacks). For domestic trips the DH's are to pretty much everywhere we fly, to get you in position on Sunday night, or Monday morning, to begin a live leg on Monday night. For the most part, you'll fly into a hub (MEM, IND, EWR, OAK, AFW), chat/sit/sleep/eat popcorn through the sort, and back to city you started from. You'll be done on Friday morning when you get into the outstation you began the trip in, have a layover, and a DH ticket back to MEM/IND. On the 757 there are many trips with 2 legs into the hub, or out of the hub after the turn, wide bodies are mostly 1 leg in, 1 leg out. International trips in the MadDog and the 777 are completely different from hub turning, but many of them begin/end with a DH (ANC, CDG, CGN, DXB, HKG, EWR, OAK).

Except for mid-trip DH's we are allowed to deviate individually from all other DH's and use the cost of the ticket to purchase our own ticket from wherever you are (not necessarily home) to wherever you'd like to go (not necessarily where your trip begins), as long as your deviation travel is within 3 days of the beginning or end of a trip. This is an absolutely phenomenal tool for commuters. Commuting QOL at FDX is better than at any other airline (similar to UPS, but we have much less use of company jumpseats), and you get to keep your miles as well. It takes some seniority to hold your preferred DH's, as everything does in the airline world, but it takes the pain out of commuting in a big way. I often show up for a flight with a ticket, many times in first/business, to IAH/SFO, DFW, and see a half dozen online jumpseaters, plus off-line jumpers, trying to get somewhere with 1 or 2 available Jumpseats, and am reminded of how tough commuting can be - not so at FDX. I'm a happy commuter here, as are the majority of our 70%ish commuters in MEM.

There are deadheads to almost every city pair it seems in the 757/767 bidpacks. I've had only two trips in the past two months with no deadheads. The past two months I've had deadheads to, from, or both (double deadheads) in PTY ATL MKE GTF PDX ROA SEA PIT YEG YWG LAX.

In the past year I've had double deadheads to CDG, CGN, DUS, and MAN.

If the city doesn't have deadheads it has long weekend layovers. And depending on the city they usually go very senior.

I will hit diamond status this year on Delta. I've made platinum every year before. Over 500,000 miles on Delta since I've started. Already I'm over $30k in tickets on DAL just this year and I've not flown them exclusively -- although I've tried. Sometimes flying out west is impossible on DAL because of three legs required for many western cities connecting to MEM and their tickets are always more expensive.

Yeah, we deadhead a lot.

Thank you both for your response, really appreciate it.

Just wanted to get an opinion from guys on property. I have a class date coming up and looking for a second opinion on aircraft to bid. I live in Indy so
ultimate goal is to hopefully be based there eventually. I'm fine staying domestic and given my small children family situation, I'm not really wanting 10-15 day trips at this point. Here's what I was thinking:
1. 767 Obviously for Ind
2. 757 Less pay but no 18 month seat lock if an Ind 76 spot would open and same type.
3. Airbus
4. 777 longer trips and I'm guessing longer reserve before a lineholder.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Obviously if I can't hold Indy since its so small I'd like to get a line commuting to Mem. Is the 757 the quickest way to achieve that currently? My last 4 ssn starts with a 2 so I'll be one of last to pick.
Thanks!

Good strategy, IMO. I'd maybe put 777 as #3 choice though - nothing against the Bus, but it seems they are the only crews I run into that have trips that sound way more painful than what we fly on the 757, the very junior trips (completely anecdotal as I never look at that bidpack).
