Early Push
I just read an Alpa e-mail. In it they described American Airlines (non alpa?) pilots' as beeing pressured to rush.
Do we not now, and have we not been ( at FDX) under an early push directive? For me, I make more mistaskes when I rush. If I have to go to the Mel or red tabs my first step (besides fly the plane) is take a deep breath. In the sim since I have an idea of the scenario I force my self not to rush. Best part of rushing for them and they will do this is : make a hard time trip pay less as an regular pairing in the bid pack. If you get a hotel during your O/B, etc and its ONE min less, no hotel for you. Their lack of planning and properly manning/equiping for bad weather is NOT my problem. |
A new manager in GOC is trying to get some attention with efficiencies. I am professional and do my job...BUT I operate within the contract, FAR's, and FOM. I show at show time and I do my job according to the countdown parameters. The company schedules me 1 hour for preflight not :50. I do not rush or cut corners I just do my job the same way I always do it. If it takes :40 great if it takes 1:20 no problem.
I believe Blue Threat taught us 'Normalization of Deviance' if preflight takes 1 hour and now they tell us to do it in :50 that becomes the new normal. I remember when International trips showed 1:30. After they changed it to 1 hour I always thought it was strange when a Captain would email me asking to show early...the company schedules the time and its "NMP" (Not My Problem) Im surprised ALPA has not been engaged in this since the CBA 2015, 12.B.1 Defines show time as 1 hour prior to scheduled block out (Except Training 1st leg of IOE 1:30) We push when we push...it helps being in the left seat now. |
The silence from Alpa is deafening

And how long ago and how many FCIF did we get on NOT pushing early unless GOC confirms it will not impact your 8/24? I guess its Safety, Legally, and :10 early (skip 1 and 2) watch those flight times! |
There has to be a reason why they are not changing the pairing times in the bid pack if they want us to arrive in MEM early. I don't know could it be something thing like some of the pairings could not be built that way????

Nothing has changed in pairing build or the CBA. What deafening response do you want from ALPA? If you don't want to push early don't push early seems pretty straightforward.

My experience might be atypical, but seems as if the majority of my pickup times are scheduled conservatively and I tend to arrive at the airport 70-80 minutes prior to departure
|
Once upon a time it was about moving the freight. The 10 minute suck toward town is nothing new...just hasn't been done in a while. I don't feel rushed or badgered into pushing early IF IM NOT READY TO GO, and don't feel like I need a policy statement from ALPA to help me figure it out.

I don't think that's the normal routine for many people. Regardless, they ought to be scheduling what they intend to do. This is no longer an anomaly, it's the norm. Wonder what the reasoning is for not scheduling how you intend it to go, on a large scale. And if it's because some pairings would be illegal or pay more....no, it's not worth ignoring just because you have the choice to push early or not. |
