Alpa ltd plan
Nice increase in the rates. What are other guys using for LTD plans?
|
More than double.
Yikes. . |
If you ever need it ... it counts as TAX FREE INCOME because you pay the premium.
:D |
The plan used to be a much better than the ALPA plan, I wonder if that is still the case. Time to do some more insurance research.

Just trust 'em. The Monthly Administration Fee that ALPA keeps didn't go up. Oh, and would more people please participate, and fewer people use the benefit, so we can lower the rates in the future, please? ;) . |
I think it is an extremely good plan, probably better than anything we could get on the open market. I understand that too many people are collecting on it, and that is why they prices are going up. However.....we have had a massive influx of newhires, many who have joined this plan. I'm assuming the vast majority of them are younger, and not collecting on the plan already, especially since they have to wait a year or two even if they went out immediately.
So, even with the high utilization rates, if you have large numbers of people joining and not using it, shouldn't rates actually be going down? I am thinking of ditching the plan, sadly, even though I just went on it recently and endured a hassle getting onto it. If this plan costs me about $5600 a year, I can't even collect on it for a year, am very healthy and will probably retire in 5-6 years, I don't think it's worth it. What are the odds the premiums would ever go down? Premiums never seem to decrease. |

I think it's a good plan because it is tax free and pays out no matter what the company, or other employment income might be. But at over two times the cost I signed up for last year, I have to re-evaluate whether it's worth it. It's not a good deal at any price (unless you feel certain that you'll need it). In my case, it's likely that I'll never need it, but it's good to have just as a protection. I'm trying to figure out the price point at which it is still worth paying for. |
One could always research how much LTD pay one would get, and keep one's budget below that.
Actually that's what I'm doing. |
Yeah, I figure I'm covered and as of now, anything else is just extra. But it does seem like a very decent plan, and odds appear significant that a FedEx pilot might use it. But at what price?
