ASA makes a app, its called Prepware private pilot on the Apple store. its free and i used it and was able to get an 85% on my private written. After you get your private, use SheppardAir for future writtens. Goodluck!

Why do the written before you fly?
You won't be able to correlate anything it will just be rote.
Study and learn yes, take the test no.
Wait till you have soloed.

Any school worth their rates will have a schedule for when to take which written exam.
For the Private it's two required:
1. Pre solo written test
2. Private Pilot written test
If you choose to solo more then one airplane model you need another pre solo written test for that type.
School may have their own written tests as 'mile markers' to track your progress.
Good luck and enjoy!

A good, informal intro to aviation before starting formal PPL training is the Aviation 101 online course sponsored by Embry-Riddle. It's free. Takes about 5 hours total, I think, and has quizzes and good graphics and simulations.

Aviation 101

Good luck!
