Default Best Way to Prepare for Inst. Rating?

What's the best way to prepare for the written FAA exam for Instrument Rating (IRA)?

Is there a study material one can purchase online?

Are the free online exams a good way to go about it?

Study. It still works.

Of course. That goes without saying, but the textbook I'm using is extremely abridged and leaves much to be desired. So, I need a secondary source of information to help me prepare.

How about the packages they sell on sheppardair.com?

I used exams4pilots and FAA material, 1 week and scored a comfortable 85, and didn't cost a penny.

By far your best bet will be Sheppard Air.

Sheppardair is about getting you through the knowledge exam, not about preparing to be an instrument pilot.

Studying to learn is quite different than swallowing enough gouge to get through the test.

Both allow you to pass the written. Only one helps make you a better pilot and contributes to your longevity.

I'm using Sporty's Instrument course. I don't really like it. You watch video and animation clips, then take a quiz. However, even if you get every single question wrong, you can still move on to the next section. It does, however, explain why the wrong answers are wrong.

Know the AIM, forwards and backwards; know the FAA Instrument Flying Manual and FAA Instrument Procedures Manual, an acquaintance with FAAO 7110.65 (".65" to the controllers, their Bible); an understanding of TERPS would be helpful, but don't try to become a procedures designer. If you will fly outside the US, Doc 8168 is essential, as is U.K. CAA CAP 471 so you won't sound like an American on the radios overseas. So some study is necessary, don't just pass the test, learn instrument flying.

SheppardAir for the written. I got a 88 on my IRA and a 92 on my FII with it about a month ago. Make sure you take the FII after your IRA if you do well on it (above an 80% should be good) as they are the same question bank.
