CFII initial or CFI initial ??

Just curious what some of you would recommend as far as what initial route to go for the CFI stuff. I have heard that it's better to go the CFII intial route because I can use the newer 172SP's with much better equip. Any thoughts?

Choose whichever you feel most knowledgeable and comfortable with. I took my MEI as my initial, then CFII; consequently I found my CFII easier than the prior probably b/c it was an add-on to the initial. Also keep in mind that if you choose to use newer equipment, you will be asked to show proficiency using it, you don't want to make anything more complicated than it needs be. Just my opinion though. Let us know how it turns out...:)

The reason many people opt to get their cfII first is because once you have your cfII you can take your cfI checkride with an FAA Examiner and not an inspector. Big difference here. The FAA inspectors can really rake you over the coals and it almost seems as if they want you to fail. Your FAA examiner will be much more tollerable and make your checkride a more pleasant experience. Its a loophole in the system. Not many people are aware of it. You hear about all the BS that the inspector's are putting cfi applicants through so I say go around them, many of them are very sour people and couldnt fly to save their lives.......its too bad.

There is no requirement to take an intial with an inspector. I know many people who have taken an initial with a DPE.

My checkride was with an inspector. It was a fair experience just like every other checkride taken with DPEs.

Well all I know is I'm doing my CFII initial and I have to take it at the Fort Worth FSDO and it's coming up QUICK !!

I'm in the middle of all these lesson plans and I have to go teach my instructor more tonight ! And he acts like an idiot student pilot for me so I have to explain everything.
It's a little weird being on the teaching end of it. Makes me respect the instructors more.

Do you have a reference for that? I always thought you had to take your initial with a FSDO.

When I was doing alot of instruction I would always recomend that the inital ride with the FSDO be the CFII. My rational was that the canidate would be nervous as a wh**e in church, so why not make it as stress free as possible.

When doing the CFII with the FSDO all they can ask you is FOI and instrument questions, as opposed to FOI, REC, PVT, and COM questions.

No reference, just like there is no reference regarding a requirement to take it with the feds. Each FSDO has the authorization to make rules regarding practical exams (ex: Ours doesn't allow self-examining authority for 141 schools). Ours is usually too short-staffed to administer them. In fact, it probably would have been cheaper for me to take it with a DPE versus waiting over a month for an inspector.

When taking any practical exam ANY material required for a rating you currently hold is fair game. Based on the requirements for a CFII (or CFI for that matter) they could ask you private questions as well. I did an ILS on my CFI initial based on the examiner's rationale of "what if you inadvertantly wandered into IMC?"
