Reading the ASA ATP studyquide and I'm reading this.

Does the sim training course count as a proficiency check? I find this statement confusing.

This is for someone who wants to excercise the rights of their ATP. Basically it depends on that companies specific outlines for training, so it could be in aircraft or the sim. For my 135 op, I have to have 12 mo and 6 mo checks, so it's all the same to me.

In the airline world there are two types of routine simulator events:

Proficiency Check (PC): Usually includes some formal oral and written quizzing, and 2 hours of sim training. This is just like a checkride, has structured events (similar to a PTS), and can be failed. Emergencies will occur one at a time only (ie no engine fire combined with loss of multiple HYD systems)

Profiency Training (PT): Usually no formal ground, other than a quick brief. This is more oriented on training, and the instructor can more-or-less run it any way he wants. The emergencies can occur simultaneously...this is where you get the cockpit fire + jammed flaps + CA flying pitch + FO flying bank with both disconnects pulled :rolleyes:

A CA gets sim training every six months. He must have a PC every 12 months, so he will usually get one PT and one PC per year. He could get two PC's, that would be legal but two PT's and no PC would not work.

The FO gets sim every 12 months. He must have a PC every 24 months, so he normally alternates PCs and PTs every other year.

Your checkride at the end of training is a PC. Also, you will get another PC at the end of your first year of employment...after that you usually alternate PC & PT.
