Acadimics
Can anybody tell me what kind of math i,ll need to know to persue this endevour. I want to know if i need to take any remedial math classes...appreciate any and all information.

You'll be well equipped if you master Algebra and pre-Calculus. I'd suggest that you also put some effort into refining written communication skills.
|
oops... I mean Acad-E-mics. Can you or anybody else give me an example of some of the math used in every day pilot life.

Descent planning: You're at 20,000ft. You need to descend to 12,000ft at 2,000fpm before you reach a fix. Your groundspeed is 240kts and you are 40nm from this fix. How far out do you begin the descent?

DING DING DING!!!
However, some of us don't have nice things like FMS. |
pip, give us the mathematical walk through :)

You're hurtling through the sky at 4 miles per minute. Your descent will take 4 minutes. You need to start at least 16 miles from the fix. I'd start at 18 so that I level off prior to reaching the fix.
As for the FMS, I agree. I'll use the planning features on the 430 any time I have one there. If it makes your job easier, take advantage of it. Prospect, there are a number of things that we do that require math. Much of it comes in the preflight planning of performance and weight and balance. The example I gave was about as difficult as I can do in the plane. I had a flight instructor that once said "If you can't do it in your head, you shouldn't do it in the plane." I think he was right. |

Your TOD was easy, just figured 2nm/1000ft, not too bad of an angle really for any jet. |
You guys are great, I cant thank you guys enough for taking time to answer all of my newbie questions
