Atlanta FSDO- 12% pass rate for CFI?
 

For years now I have heard reports of a 12% pass-rate for the Atlanta FSDO initial CFI checkrides. Just wondered if anybody can dispute or confirm it. There is rumor that many flight schools send all their initials to Florida to get a better pass rate because of this.

I hear the national average is 10%.

Average pass rate in chicago is around 10%. Somehow I got by on the first try after only a 9 hour oral over 2 days and a 2 hour flight. Heard rumors that some of the FAA guys try to find a reason to fail applicants to keep their numbers up. One of my buddies busted because he could only talk about density altitude for 30 min. not an hour like the FAA guy wanted...sheesh

Rumors could be from anywhere, including propaganda from inspectors to dissuade those who are not serious from applying.

If I am reading this link correctly the national average is between 65-75%. It does not break it down by district and it does not say if pink slips are included in the eventual certificates.

My thought is- who but FAA itself would know what the pass rate is- even if it is say 10%- any bonafide rumors must be from FAA itself. That doesn't change anything perhaps, other than scare you a little bit if you are a CFI applicant, but tells you they keep tabs on it for one thing and if you're smart you'll go where the odds are best.

Who would plunge into something where the odds are 10%.

I wouldn't let those "statistics" scare me. Just study hard and be well prepared. There's no way they can expect perfection and a student cfi isn't expected to know everything. I look at my checkrides as just more learning, not a test. If he does throw you an off the wall curve ball...just learn from it and move on. If you have to make a second trip.....atleast you'll know what to expect.

I got my 10% statistic from the flight school I attended. They supply over 80% of the CFI inital applicants to the chicago FDSO and of those supplied about 10% pass on the first try.
