It's been so long since I instructed out of Long Beach, any comments are out of date. The Long Beach Flying Club as been around for years and I rented there in the 80's. I have a student that now instructs out of Aces High in Long Beach.
I would try a couple of discovery flights out of various places. It's very much a personal fit kind of thing.

I'm sorry to resurrect this older thread but I am currently looking to begin my flight training here in the SoCal area (especially: Long Beach, El Monte, Fullerton) and wanted to see if there was any new input with regards to the schools mentioned in this thread. Thanks!

...after doing some research I'm looking at polar opposites in the flight training world. In my local area (KLGB) there's the Long Beach Flying Club which is by all accounts one of the most affordable places to train at in the area, and then there's Angel City Flyers which leans towards the more expensive side (they are a "Diamond Training Center"). I'm conflicted on where to go, on the one hand most people say to get your training at the most affordable price possible, which would by the LBFC, but then again, ACF seems to have a great curriculum and a structured approach to training which could be helpful as I want to do all my training, then CFI my way onto a regional. I'm leaning more towards LBFC for the price, ACF says on their website $16K for a private at close to FAA minimums (40) but most people take longer. I'm just thinking out loud and wanted to get different opinions. I get the feeling that in the long run this venture will be expensive no matter were I go so I might as well just commit to a flight school and get on with it...

Maybe you get what you pay for? Maybe not, but sometimes that can be the case with newer airplanes with a better maintenance department.
Never take an advertised quote at face value. The average is 65 hours or so. But there are ways to trim that average down.
