Default ASU Aviation Opinions

Can any recent graduates or current students in the ASU professional flight program share any thoughts or opinions? I live in Arizona and I am wondering if it would be worth it to go out of state or just go to ASU.

It's a good program. We have lots of professors with decades of industry experience and a legitimate interest in their students. The fact that you're in-state is a definite plus, but how will you be paying for the actual flight training? Loans? Parents? It's contracted through ATP, and they definitely are out to make money. Flight training is where the money reallllly starts to get important in the program. It definitely is cheaper than Riddle, though.

Another important consideration is how good of a student are you? The 141 program for instrument and commercial-multi both have intense end-of-course checks. You're told about it when you start training, and they will kick you out if you keep failing the EOC. You'll still be an ASU flight student, but you won't be getting the 141 training which is the requirement for the restricted ATP. There's no hand-holding, it's on y-o-u. It happened to my roommate, so now that's 500 extra hours he will need to hit the minimums for an airline. Please don't be that kid. You need to be a good studier and be able to prioritize preparing for your stage checks and checkrides over the more fun things we college kids like to do sometimes. It'll be great practice for the airlines, too. For perspective, I'm a sophomore and a good half of the people I started with aren't in the 141 program anymore so they will not be getting their R-ATP and have to get 1500 instead of 1000.

I don't know how young you are, but if you have the time I'd highly advise you to get your private before you start here. You'll "get it" and can see the forest through the trees when it comes to flying. Not everything in aviation requires a policy or procedure like it does when you fly with ATP. I came in with my private last year when I started and because of that, I was able to knock out instrument, commercial-multi, and commercial-single before the end of my first summer. That will allow me to slowly build my hours over the next few years, as well as devote my time and energy elsewhere, like the six-month internship with American I will be starting in January in Dallas.

Oh, one more thing, the campus the flight majors stay at is boring. If you come here, join a frat or take some classes on Tempe campus where there will be a higher ratio than poly, which is an absolute sausage fest. If you have any other questions feel free to message me.
