air traffic controllers

Whats the lookout for new controllers over the next 5-10 years?

Both good and bad.

FAA is going to experience a major shortage of controllers and hiring will be at all time record levels. However based on what I hear from controllers that are out there on the job now, there's a reason why the FAA is going to have a shortage.

People are quitting left and right and counting down days to early retirement since the work conditions and BS are getting really bad.

My ATC teacher was a controller in the Navy and he actually believes they'll need about 12,000 new controllers in the near future.

I'd agree with that statement. Many facilities are already understaffed and the retirements will just keep coming. I've heard estimates as high as 15,000 in the next 10 years.

I have thought about training to be an ATC...I just don't want to commit suicide when I'm 35.

actually, I believe they're hiring now....and you don't have to be ex-military or go to one of the CTI schools. Three of my good friends are now controllers after realizing that the regionals weren't their cup of tea.

I have a friend who was called this year for a controller position 10 years after the initial application. Has a start date in OKC (school) this May. So they are hiring. But they did call him up last year, and cancelled him a month before class.

My dad is a controller and has been for over thirty years. Many of the facilities are on mandatory 6 day weeks 10hr days because they are so short. And they can't keep the classes full because of the salary cap. Hopefully that will one day be a thing of the past so we can get good, qualified people in there that will keep me and you seperated.

SLpilot 04-11-2007 03:13 PM

me and you seperated? i dont understand

and whats the salarie cap for it?

iflyprops 04-11-2007 04:38 PM

I meant in the air...lol. I.E. No mid-airs :)

I think the salary cap is somewhere around 85k.
