Default Once Upon A Time: MESA

Hello APC,

I remember back in 97' when I was last thinking about becoming a commercial airline pilot, there was an Ab Initio Program called the Mesa Pilot Development Program. I think it was out of New Mexico. I sent off for information, read it all, reviewed their website and had conversations with an Administrator on-site. I never signed up for the program, after my soon to be Wife at the time, found out about the pay and potential constant relocations before getting on with a Major Airline. I was done before I even started.

Pushing that aside, it is now 2018. Some 21 years later, how has the MESA program turned out in your opinion?

I'm no longer interested being a professional airline pilot, but I do have the need to finally get trained and quality time under my belt in preparation for owning and flying a VLJ on a regular basis. Back when I was looking at Mesa, they were emphasizing the Ab Initio (From The Beginning) part of their program and how starting out in the right seat of a Beech 1900D, was a matter of routine course for their graduates.

Would you classify the Mesa Program as being on par with something like the ATP Flight School Program or the Monarch Air Flight Training Program? Monarch offers a part 61 option as well as part 141, by the way.

Thanks.

Mesa shut down MAPD years ago, and they no longer operate any 1900s (all jets now).

But that's actually not a bad idea... Mesa might still have a similar program with ASU, might look into that. And there might be other similar programs evolving now.

If you can take the time off, you could do GA training to CPL ASEL, fly for fun to 1500, and then go work for a regional, flying until you feel comfortable in the jet (500-800 hours?). They you'd be good to go in a VLJ.
