X plane as a training aid.
How many here use X plane 11 as a training aid? I find the realism spot on, yeah I've cooked a few engines in the learning process.

Computer game.
Take what you learn in the airplane and transfer it to the game. Not the other way around. |
Only for instrument procedures. And only AFTER you have enough training to use the correct procedures. As a CFI I had a student who learned all kinds of bad habits from MS Flight Sim, it was hard to break him of those...
It's not going to do much for stick-and-rudder maneuvers, missing tactile feel, peripheral vision, etc. |

I tried using it for my Instrument rating, but even at that it was really difficult for me to relate to the actual flying. Lots of people seemed to find it useful though.

You just have to be very disciplined not to cut corners, do everything as you would exactly on a plane. I invested on a Yoke, Rudder Pedals and Throttle and I don't regret it. I just wish I had a better machine, but it does the what it needs to. |
I have found Xplane 11 to be a "fun computer game" when used for Private & VFR stuff, but have found that it has paid for itself and is an extremely useful tool when used for instrument stuff- things like practice-shooting more complicated or unfamiliar approaches before you spend $ and get in the real plane, cranking up the turbulence and minimum weather conditions for maintaining instrument scan proficiency in difficult conditions, transitioning from shooting approaches in steam to G1000 et al... think of it as an "instrument rating version of the E6B"... make sure to have a good graphics card lots of RAM and get the yoke, pedals & throttle quadrant. Also, Foreflight on the iPad syncs seamlessly with Xplane making it feel more like a real cockpit...

My lil brother completely learnt from flight simulator 2004 :D
I think is very useful to learn all the instruments in the cockpit so dont get confused but for Ir why not to use Flygo Pilot Trainer IFR Pack app for iPhone, iPad | FlyGo-Aviation Ltd. or something which is real??? Xplane for me is just a game :D

Xplane for me is just a game :D X-Plane literally saved me hundreds of dollars, if not thousands just by allowing me to shoot practice approaches, radial trackings, holds, by using it with Pilot Edge it helped my radio communication tremendously, among other things. If used properly it is an amazing tool to be used. If you use it as a game then well, it's nothing more than a game. :) |
No, it's a game.
It is not a simulator. |
